How Can It Get Better?

Ch. 10

Katie's POV

I jolted up at the sound of the bell. I remembered what happened and tears suddenly sprang to my eyes. 'My brother can't be dead.' Alex turned in his chair and stared at me like I was crazy. "What's wrong with you?" he asked.

I looked at with a very confused look, "What do you mean 'what's wrong with you?' Do you not remember what happened?" I barely managed to get out through my tears.

"So your brother and you had a fight, I didn't think you'd still be upset about that." He picked up his books and left the classroom.

'What?' I thought. Does he not remember that my brother died or is he trying to make me forget that it happened? I got up from my chair and walked out into the hallway. I walked past Brooke and she gave me a sad glance. Well at least she remembers.

I was lost in thought when I heard a bunch of laughing and noise in front of me. I picked up my head and saw Luke! He was messing around with his football buddies. 'But how is that possible,' I thought, 'I saw him die. That can't be him unless...' Then it hit me, ' Could I possibly have been dreaming?' As I thought about it more what happened became less of a reality and more of a dream. It had only been a dream!

When I discovered this, I screamed with joy and went running at my brother. I jumped on him and gave him the biggest hug ever. "Luke I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything. I understand you were just trying to protect me and I shouldn't have blown up at you like I did. I love you, Luke." Luke hugged back and smiled at me.

"I love you too, Katie. I'm so glad you forgave me but what made you want to forgive me?" he questioned. I looked at him and sighed realizing I was going to have to tell him what happened. I started telling him about my dream and when I came to the part where I saw Luke lying on the ground, I began to tear up so much that I couldn't stop the tears from rolling down my face. Luke looked at me sympathetically when he saw how much the dream had scared me. He pulled me into another hug. "It's okay, Katie. I'm okay, I'm right here. Don't be scared; I've got you."

"I'm sorry it just seemed so real. I thought you really died." I buried my head into his chest and barely whispered, "I can't imagine living without my best friend."

Luke's POV

Katie had her head against my chest crying and she spoke into my shirt so that I could hardly hear her, "I can't imagine living without my best friend." Wow! I never knew she thought of me like that. I always thought of her as my best friend but I never knew she did. I smiled and looked at Katie in her blue eyes filled with tears, "I can't imagine life without my best friend either even if she annoys me sometimes." I smiled and she laughed.

I told her I had to leave because I'm going to be on a float for the homecoming parade. I've actually been nominated for king. "Did Kelly get nominated for queen?" Katie asked. Kelly Rose is my girlfriend who I've been dating for almost a year now. Saturday(the night of the homecoming dance) is actually our one year anniversary. Kelly is the most gorgeous girl I've ever met. She has light brown hair, with hazel eyes and the prettiest smile that can brighten up even the darkest days.

"Yep. I'm going to be her escort," I said smiling like an idiot. I couldn't help but smile because every time I thought about her a smile just spread across my face. "Okay, I've got to go and work on the banner for my float. See you later." I said waving goodbye to my little sister.

"Wait! I've got a study hall this period, maybe I can come and help," Katie called after me.

I turned around and yelled back at her," It's cool with me. Just get it okayed by your teacher." Katie smiled and ran towards her classroom. I'm so glad she forgave me. Katie really is my best friend and without her I felt lost. I mean sure I put a smile on my face but it was fake even when I was hanging out with Kelly. Kelly didn't mind though. She understood how I felt because she's had the same thing happen to her only it was her dad not a sister (it couldn't be with a sister because she only has a brother).

When I finally got outside to where the float is, I realized I was the luckiest guy in the world. I have two siblings who love me, two parents who care for me and a beautiful girlfriend, how can life get better. Just then Kelly walked up to me and kissed my cheek. 'Oh! That's how it can get better.' I thought smiling to myself.
