Eight.
The following day, I found myself bunking off with Calum, Ashton and Melissa. It had only taken ten minutes of Calum's pleading, pouting and puppy dog eyes for me to agree to skip class for the day. It was the kind of silly mischief that only school kids would get such a kick from- too bad I was such a goody good and never skipped once in high school or primary back home.
Home. God, I really missed it.
I hadn't thought of it much, with my coursework, new friends, and what happened with Ashton occupying my mind, but it was still there in the back of my mind. Since I'd arrived in Sydney, I'd spoken very little about Perth to anyone; it's best not to dwell on the past, right?
'What are you thinking?' Melissa glanced at me curiously before returning her gaze to the road. I sighed, shaking my head as the thought of home passed. I wound down the window - there was a bit of wind today, nothing like Perth weather. It was a colder here too, but certainly not cold; just comfortable.
Melissa raised an eyebrow but she got the hint, changing the subject.
'Does Ash pash well, then?'
'Mel!' I hissed embarrassedly, glancing to the back seat.
'Come on, he's not even listening.' She was right; Ashton and Calum's chatter was so quick and loud that they probably wouldn't hear us even if we yelled. I sighed.
'It was a pretty nice kiss, I guess,' I said, trying not to make a big deal of it. Melissa smirked.
'So you like him.'
'No- Well, maybe,' I replied, whispering the last part. She laughed.
'I can read you like an open book, babe.'
She pulled her car into parking spot outside a bustling cafe, poking her head between the headrests.
'Do you losers want brunch or what?'
We trailed into the place, eventually finding a four seater table. Melissa seemed to be the only one of us who had been here. She raked her eyes over the menu, announcing that each meal was 'amazing' as she read them.
'Why don't you just get everything,' Ashton told her sarcastically. She smirked at him, joining in.
'Sure, if you're paying. We'll get one of every meal, please,' she turned to the waitress.
'No, no, no!' Ashton protested. 'That was not an offer!'
I couldn't help but giggle, he was so wound up and had this adorable little frown on his face. I punched Melissa playfully, and told the amused waitress what I wanted. The others placed their orders, even Melissa after a good five minutes.
Calum started reeling on about how brunch was a great invention, but why was it called 'brunch' and not 'luckfast'. I personally thought it was obvious that luckfast sounded pretty bad, but didn't get to share my opinion as our meals arrived quite quickly.
'You certainly picked a good cafe, Mel, they cooked these super fast,' Calum said, taking a huge bite of his BLT bagel. I nodded, digging into my French toast and trying to stop Calum from stealing bits of my caramelised banana. I looked away for no more than three seconds and he'd scarfed the entire banana, so I nicked some of his bacon in return.
Melissa had gone for the classic pancakes and Ashton had ordered the same as me.
'I can't believe you ordered the same as me, you copy cat,' I told him. He stopped eating for a moment to poke his tongue out at me.
'I always get French toast, it's like, my favourite breakfast food.'
Trying to ignore the stupid butterflies erupting in my stomach, i took a sip of my water. French toast was my favourite, too. You're so childish, I told myself.
