A Chill In The Air
Chapter Thirty
Now that Cedric had explained fully to Paisley what was going on, it was more than well-deserved that she should now ask him some questions. The atmosphere between the two now considerably calmer as the truth had lifted the veil, there was no chill in the air. The expression on Cedric’s face needed no explanation, it was evident that lifting the veil on the truth had in a certain way in fact liberated him; carrying the burden of such information must have taken its toll on him through the centuries. Paisley on the other hand felt more of a burden knowing that he had to carry this for more years than she cared to think of, despite being told all of that she felt more sorry for him than of the situation.
Looking up at Cedric once more, Paisley took a gentle breath and stood up still facing his direction. “I think it’s only fair I should ask you some questions, if I am to keep this secret.” Cedric without any hesitation nodded and agreed to her proposal. “Go on.” Nodding back Paisley exhaled, “Why is it me? Why out of billions of people on this planet did I get chosen? Not that I mind it but why? I don’t regret meeting you or anything, if anything I would meet you a thousand times but surely there has to be a reason I was chosen to be entwined with you.” Standing up from his comfortable leaning position, Cedric walked over to meet her in the space that she stood, looking down at her with a warm gaze. “I don’t know, we’ve tried to figure this out for decades but there’s no solid answer as to why it’s you. Or anyone else for that matter.” Blinking now confused, Paisley leaned her head ever so slightly to one side. “Someone else?” Cedric nods, “Yes, you’re not the only one whose fate’s been doomed for eons, your friend Layla she too is caught in this web of mystery.” Paisley couldn’t believe her ears, did Layla leave this out? Or didn’t she know? All Paisley could do now was gape and stare at Cedric.
Cedric since explaining all to Paisley had taken her downstairs for a safe cup of tea and a chat, the two now seated back on chest on the couch. Both of them feeling much better and cosier now that the air had been cleared and Paisley knew what was going on, Cedric also took the liberty of explaining to her that she mustn’t go near Tyler after showing her what he looked like. Paisley agreed to that and asked Cedric what’s so bad about him, Cedric further explained that he’s the one manipulating the situation and turning things around on Tanner and Paisley nods and turns her attention back to the TV. “So that’s what’s going on, I would never have guessed in a million years.” Smirking Cedric gently planted a kiss on the top of her head and cuddled her tighter, “Yeah, but I feel better now you know, who knew I would find you here its fate.” He smirked more at his own pun, seeing as their fates were always entwined together.
After spending about an hour in peace and calm Paisley looked around at Cedric, “I want to go see Layla, I have a feeling she’s not taking this like I am, knowing her she’s tried to look like she’s alright but inside she could be freaking out.” Nodding Cedric rose to his feet, “Alright, I think Tanner wanted us there anyway once you knew. Let’s go baby.” Paisley got to her own feet and shook her head. “I want to go home and get a few things if this is going to be a long journey.” “No Paisley it’s not needed, we’ll be there no more than one night and there’s provisions already there, we better be going.” Taking her hand Cedric led her down to his car, carefully helping her inside before getting into his and driving them away once he had the car running.
In a little over an hour later the roar of the engine could be heard from inside the house as Cedric pulled up outside, and with sleeping Paisley next to him in the car as the engine slows to a silent stop. Unbuckling his seatbelt Cedric leaned over and removed hers and stroked her cheek smiling fondly at her sleeping form, “Paisley, wake up we’re here now.” He said soothingly so not to startle her as she easily came around from her sleep, “Already?” “Yes baby it’s been an hour, take it easy now you’ve been asleep for the whole trip.” He kept his smile as in an instant he was around at her side helping her out and onto the feet, shutting her door and locking the car with a push of a button. “They’re waiting for us inside.” All Paisley could do was nod as she was still waking up from her sleep, she was a deep sleeper so coming round fully took her a bit longer.
Once inside the two of them looked up when they heard a door close softly, Tanner strode out from a hallway looking both relieved and distressed as he stopped in from of Paisley and Cedric. Cedric shook his hand firmly and looked at Paisley, “This is Paisley, the girl I’ve been telling you about, you know, the one my fate’s entwined with.” Nodding Tanner took her hand and kissed her knuckles and he smiled. “A pleasure to meet you Miss Roberts, I’ve heard much about you.” Blushing Paisley nodded back and returned a kind smile, “Thank you, I-I don’t mean to be rude but I want to go see Layla, where is she?” “Down the hall and to the right, she’s still out of it but she’ll come around for you I’m sure.” He kept his smile until after Paisley had left Cedric’s side and went into the room Layla was in. Both Tanner and Cedric exhaled a shared breath, sitting down in the makeshift living room space. “I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a bad feeling that this is only the start of it. How’d Layla take it then?” Cedric asked as Tanner rubbed his brow “Well up until the point when she fainted, not from shock but I guess from holding it in too long” “Paisley said that might be the case, I’m just glad they’re in it together in a way.” Tanner leaned back in the chair and groaned “Yeah.” The two sat in silence thinking about Tyler as they left the girls to it, waiting for when Layla would come around again.
