A Chill In The Air

Chapter Six

Back across town Paisley remained where she sat in her brief yet interesting meeting with her mystery man Cedric, now his name is known to her he’s not quite a full mystery to her anymore. She sat quiet and still as she watched his perfectly sculptured clothed body exit the café and disappear around the corner, her heart not calming down since his first words of flattery he spoke to her. Caught in the reflection of the napkin dispenser Paisley could see that the pink hue had not vanished from her cheeks since she was still thinking about him, the more she thought about him the lesser the pink hue became and the more redder she appeared.

Down in her hands was the card Cedric had given Paisley, his name and number gracefully etched into the back of the card so not to disrupt the delicate balance of the design on the front. All that ran though Paisley’s head at this point in time was whether she should test out his number to see if it was bogus or genuine, to call soon or not to call soon, that indeed was Paisley’s inner question. Deciding to call him when she gets home, Paisley rose from her seat paying the waitress and swiftly yet gracefully left the café for her apartment of which she called home.

As she walks down the street all that could be heard to her was the sound of Paisley’s ankle boot heels as she walked along the sidewalk, gently clicking matching the gentle stride in her step, casually unaware of the impending danger that was soon to befall Paisley. As it had rained the previous night through into the morning the roads were now coated with wet dew making even the sturdiest tyres slippery on the road surface. Behind her a car which was clearly at least double the speed limit for this area skidded from its ordinary driving position now heading in the path straight where Paisley was walking. Crowds of people gasped, yelled and screamed in terror as the out of control cars all disrupted their peaceful lunchtime commute, sending many people in different directions as they fled for their lives fearing what damage would be done to them if she didn’t move. Blissfully unaware of all of this going on behind her Paisley continued to walk down the sidewalk with her headphones in her ear ironically playing Michael Bublé’s song ‘It’s a Beautiful Day’.

Walking down the other side of the street was none other than Cedric whom she had met not even an hour ago, returning from briefly from home back on his way to work when before his eyes he could see the commotion firstly unfold into the chaos that now lay before him. He could see the silver Mercedes heading for Paisley and if on pure instinct he dashed from his current spot and over in the direction of which Paisley was now walking. The car grew ever close to Paisley as the perilous driver fought to try and regain control of his car much to his avail as the car continued to skid across the road and towards the sidewalk. “PAISLEY!” Cedric flailed his arms as he sped towards her and as if by luck she looked up gasping as she saw both him and the car heading for her. He reached out careful not to touch her in any inappropriate place as he as gently as he could, shoved her out the way of the oncoming car and to safety.

As Paisley’s body landed with a skid on the pavement, all that was heard as the car came to a stop inches before a glass fronted store selling the latest in young girls fashion wear, was a loud and predominant thud ringing out as now in front of the car lay the body of a man Paisley recognised, the same hair, eyes, face and sculptured body shape as before the car and looking rather unconscious and bloody, was Cedric.
