It's been a week since Macie was born, and I've never been happier. Macie now has the appearance of a seven year old girl, keeping with the year-every-day trend. Her thick blonde hair is now reaching near her waist, her natural curls making me incredibly jealous. Her blue eyes sparkle constantly, reflecting her always happy feelings.
Okay, maybe not always. Michael has yet to leave, and at this rate, I'm beginning to wonder if he's ever going to as long as Macie is here. He isn't very fond of the girl, and it's clear to everyone. Even Macie knows it. She asked Lucifer and I about it yesterday, and it was not a fun conversation.
"Mom, Dad?" she had asked us that night. "Why does Michael hate me?"
"Michael doesn't hate you," I replied immediately, assuming she's drop it.
"Yes, he does," she insisted. "It's obvious. He doesn't even try to hide it."
"Michael likes you," Lucifer assured her. "He just doesn't know what to expect from you, that's all. He's just worried about you."
"He's not worried about me," she replied. "He doesn't like me. You don't have to pretend he does. I just want to know why."
Lucifer and I exchanged a look. Neither of us knew how to respond to this. She was right, of course. She had gotten to the age where she can sort of figure things out by herself, and this was too obvious. Finally, I spoke.
"I'm just gonna be real with you," I said. "You're right. Michael doesn't really like you. He doesn't dislike you, but he doesn't like you. The thing is, what you are... It's never been seen before. You're the first kid of an angel, so he's watching you, waiting for you to slip up. So if you don't like him, I won't blame you. I don't really like him, either. Just be nice to him, and don't let him see how much you can do, okay?"
"An angel?" Macie repeated. "Oh, Dad, right? You said that Dad is an angel? Lucifer?"
I nodded. "Yeah, Dad's the angel Lucifer," I confirmed.
"Okay. I'll try to avoid Michael," Macie told us. "But can you try to get him off my back?"
"We can try, but no one controls my brother," Lucifer replied darkly.
"Thanks, sweetie," I added, giving Macie a brief hug.
"I love you," Macie said. "I won't let you down."
I sometimes worry that she's growing up to fast. Sure, she seems to be 365 times older than she should be, but that's not the issue. I feel like she has too much responsibility on her shoulders for a seven year old. She has to hide who she is in front of Michael, and though it was never specified, she knows the general reason. She hides in my room a lot, so she can have fun with her powers without having to worry about Michael stopping her.
Her powers are amazing, too. In the privacy of my bedroom, she's shown us a lot. She can do just about anything. She can make music play at random, create light and destroy it, move things and people, and even overpower Lucifer, an archangel. It's amazing, the things she does without batting an eye.
My only problem is that she doesn't sleep anymore. She stopped after the first few days of gradually decreasing time unconscious. It means I get to sleep without her waking me, but the fact that she doesn't is strange to me. I suppose it doesn't matter, though. If she doesn't have to sleep, I guess I can't change that.
There's a light knocking on my door in the middle of the day. Lucifer, Macie and I are all sitting on my bed, watching as Macie floats things around the room. Macie opens the door without getting up, something she enjoys doing so much Lucifer decided to let her do it all the time.
Jared and Gabriel appear in the doorway with balloons. "Happy one week birthday!" they say in unison.
Macie giggles and runs up to them, embracing them both at once. "Thank you!"
Gabriel hands her the balloons. "Come on, we've got cake!"
Though Macie could easily make one appear now, Macie follows them excitedly out of the room. Lucifer and I follow, not jumping for joy like Macie but enjoying this anyway. Lucifer takes my hand in a very coupley way, which I find adorable as always.
"Happy one week birthday, kiddo!" Jensen greets her with a smile. He crouches down as Macie runs to him, and they're nearly the same height as she hugs him as well. If there is one thing I've learned about the kid, it's that she's a hugger.
"Does she really need a party after a week?" Michael asks, not amused.
"Yes, she does, so shut it," Gabriel replies.
"I heard cake!" Macie says.
"Yep, we've got that," Crowley agrees. "Come on, let's eat!"
We all gather around the table, everyone enjoying their delicious food. Well, everyone but Michael, who just sits with us in a very bored way.
"Presents!" Ruth says when everyone finishes eating.
"She doesn't need presents. She can make anything herself," Michael reminds us.
I look at Macie, feeling bad that Michael wants to ruin the party. It's clear that his remarks are getting to her, but as always, she doesn't say anything about it.
"Presents are a necessary part of a birthday party!" Jensen tells him.
"But this whole birthday party is ridiculous," Michael replies. "A birthday is for a year, not a week."
"Well, we're celebrating a week anyway," Lucifer says.
"It doesn't make sense."
Macie sighs. "Thanks, guys, but I don't want to deal with this meanie." She hops off her chair and walks away.
"Don't go!" Gabriel says, teleporting/flying to her side. "Don't leave yet! We haven't even gotten to the fun part yet!"
"What's the fun part?" Macie asks, her curiosity piqued.
"I don't know yet, but I'm sure it will be fun!" Gabriel replies, causing Macie to giggle. "Come on, it's present time! Come back!"
Macie nods once. "Okay, Gabey. For you."
Gabriel smiles victoriously as he leads Macie back to the table.
"Present time?" Ruth asks again.
"Yeah!" Macie replies excitedly.
Ruth hands her a small box. Macie excitedly tears the wrapping paper off to reveal a small white box. She removes the contents and looks at it curiously.
"What's this?" Macie asks.
"It's an iPod," Ruth explains. "You can play games and listen to music on it."
"Music?" Macie repeats. "Like Tim McGraw?"
I shoot Lucifer an accusing look as I say, "You're tainting my child."
"Tim is the best, thank you very much," Lucifer replies.
"How do I use this?" Macie asks, turning the iPod slowly as if looking for some sort of clue.
"Press the bottom at the bottom," Ruth explains.
"She can't turn it on, and you think she's gonna love it?" Michael asks under his breath, clearly not impressed.
Macie glances up at him angrily before returning her gaze to the iPod. She presses the home button, and the screen lights up. Following the instructions on the screen, she swipes it and it unlocks. It's clear that Ruth has already set it up.
"How do I get games?" Macie asks.
"Go to the App Store," Ruth instructs, showing Macie how to use it. "It's hooked up to my credit card, so feel free to buy what you'd like."
Macie grins. "Thank you!" she squeals, tapping rapidly on the screen.
"If it's not her money, she won't hesitate to spend it all," Michael says.
Macie sighs and looks up at him, meeting his eye as she says, "Michael, please stop," in a very polite way. It's impossible to miss her annoyance, though.
"Stop what?" Michael asks, though I believe he knows what he's doing.
"Stop criticizing everything I do," Macie clarifies, struggling to keep her cool facade up.
"I don't criticize everything you do," Michael replies calmly.
"Well..." Lucifer says, but Michael shoots him a threatening look, and he shuts up.
"Yes, you do," Macie says. "If you don't like me, fine. You don't have to stay here. Just please leave me alone."
Everyone looks at Macie in surprise. That's the most adult thing she's ever said. She's probably handling this better than any of the adults would have. Macie just waits patiently for a response from Michael, seemingly oblivious to the surprise of those around her.
"Unfortunately, I can't do that," Michael replies. "You should not exist, and, should the need arise, I want to make sure that happens."
"Michael!" Lucifer yells. "Enough! She's just a kid! Leave her alone!"
"I can't do that," Michael repeats.
"But I'm not 'just a kid,'" Macie says, standing up in a dramatic fashion. With the flick of her hand, Michael flies into a wall. "I'm much, much more than that."
"Macie!" I quickly try to stop her, but she shakes me off.
"Fine, I'm done," she says.
"Yes, you are," Michael agrees. "I can't allow you to do this."
Macie rolls her eyes, sinking into her hip sassily. "Like you could hurt me."
"You may overpower one archangel, but not all of Heaven."
When a whole bunch of angels appear in the room, I realize that we have trouble. Macie yelps and hides behind me, and I shield her with my arm protectively. I push her back quickly, trying to get her away from all this.
An angel teleports to my side and takes Macie by the arm. Without thinking, I kick him in the kneecap. Lucifer teleports to us, probably to either get the angel or Macie away, but Michael follows him and takes Macie by the hand.
"Let her go!" Lucifer yells, his fatherly instinct trumping his brotherly relations as he takes Michael by the arm, twisting it until he's in the ground. Michaels gets up immediately, but I pick Macie up and run before he can get her.
"Mom, stop!" Macie pleads.
"Not now," I reply hurriedly.
Suddenly, what looks like a portal appears in front of us. I look at it with wide eyes, and Macie takes the chance to get out of my arms. Lucifer appears in our view, about to come to us, with Michael directly behind her.
"I'll come back somehow!" Macie yells. Before anyone can stop her, she jumps into the portal, which immediately disappears after here.
After that, everything stops. The fighting stops, the yelling stops, and all that's left is knowing that Macie is gone. I find myself staring at the spot where the portal used to reside, hoping it will come back with my girl. It doesn't.
"Where-" Michael begins, but Lucifer cuts him off in an icy voice.
"I will give you five seconds to leave, and I swear to god, if I ever see you again, I will kill you."
After a moment, I hear the flapping of wings, and I know he's gone, likely with the rest of the angels. I don't check, though. I'm still waiting for the portal, hoping against hope it will come back.
It's silent for a long moment, no one sure what to say. Finally, I see Lucifer walk past me and down the hall. Someone calls after him, but my mind is too broken to hear who it was. Lucifer doesn't respond, either.
I feel a hand on my shoulder. I glance behind me to see Mark standing with me, a sad look on his face. How he appeared, I don't know, but I don't ask. He opens his mouth to say something, but I shake my head, and he stops.
I feel a tear fall down my face, but I don't try to hide it. I don't care who sees me crying. I don't care about anything right now. Macie's gone. My little girl is gone, and I don't know if she'll ever come back.A/N The End! Don't worry, this isn't the end of their journeys. Both Bailey and Macie will return soon! Check out my other books for one entirely about Macie! It will likely have a completely different feel than this one, but the next in this series will be just like this one. Well, as similar as my stories in the series usually are. Damn, this is two depressing endings of this series in a row. Idk what my next one is about, but I'll try to make it happier. Maybe. As always, feel free to check out my other stories! I'll put the title of the book about Macie in here when I publish the first chapter, possibly today. We'll see! Also, Macie is the name of my dog, which is why I chose it. Have a crappy picture of her because I failed at technology and accidentally deleted most of the other ones. She stole my glove. Ah, puppies. Gotta love 'em.
