Michael's memory ends, and I'm suddenly brought back to the real world. I gasp as the knowledge occurs, in what must have seemed like a moment to them but for me, the scene played out in real time.
"Oh my god," I mutter as that sinks in. That's the story of Adam and Eve. That's why Lucifer was booted out of Heaven. He protected his brother, and it lead to him being kicked out.
"What?" Lucifer asks immediately, turning to look at me. Their discussion seems to completely disappear in his mind when he realizes something is wrong with me.
I look up at Michael, who's watching me curiously. He seems strangely emotionally detached, like this only interests him in the way an animal dying would interest a biologist instead of its family.
"The snake... That was...?"
"What are you talking about?" Lucifer asks, clearly wondering where snakes come from. It probably sounds strange to him, even being the random and spontaneously minded person he is.
"In the garden," I clarify.
"What garden? We aren't talking about a garden."
"Of Eden," I add. "The snake in the garden of Eden. That was..." That was Michael, not Lucifer like God-Rob-thought it was.
"How do you know this?" Michael asks in a dangerously low tone.
"You were thinking it," I reply. "Or remembering."
"How do you know this?" Michael repeats.
Lucifer briefly explains the situation that Janus has caused, resulting in my telepathy.
"And are you going to stop it?" Michael asks when he finishes. "Or will she have to live with this forever?"
Lucifer holds up his book. "I was trying to, but then I started explaining who Janus is, and now we're here."
"I will help," Michael announces.
"What?" Lucifer replies, taken aback by his offer.
"I cannot allow a human to possess so much power. It is unnatural. I will stop this, as it is my job."
"Don't you have a home to rule?" Lucifer reminds him.
"I do," he agrees. "But this must be my priority."
"Okay, then get a book or something," Lucifer says uncertainly. I look at him, wanting to know how he feels about Michael helping.
Great, the three remaining archangels under one roof. That's gonna go well. Oh well. Michael's pretty smart. Maybe he'll figure something out that we wouldn't have otherwise.
"What are you even expecting to find in there?" Gabriel asks.
"Nothing," Lucifer replies. "But I'm hoping that something will come up that will help fix this."
"I'd offer to help, but it's so unlikely, I'm not going to subject my mind to all that reading," Gabriel says jokingly.
"You don't have to," Lucifer tells him. "Go do whatever. Hang out with Jared or something. There hasn't been any cute Sabriel moments in forever."
Gabriel's smile brightens when his brother mentions Jared. "Good idea. Thanks, bro. Good luck." Gabriel practically skips out of the room. Castiel follows, not wanting to do research either. The only one that hesitates is Rob.
"What about the snake in Eden?" he asks us cautiously.
"Nothing," Lucifer replies dismissively. "Well, nothing knew. Bailey just didn't realize that was why I got the boot, right, kid?" He smiles at me, but I know what he wants by his thoughts.
Just agree.
"Uh, yeah," I lie. "I guess I never really thought about it."
Rob looks at me curiously, but seems to accept the reason. He excuses himself, probably just because he doesn't want to do research. That leaves me alone with two archangels. I wait until Rob is gone before looking at Lucifer.
"You went to Hell because-"
"Yes," Lucifer interrupts.
"But-"
"Don't say anything," he stops me.
"But-"
Rob still doesn't know, Lucifer tells me by thought. He thinks I let the snake in the garden, and that's what he's going to think. The end.
"But that's not fair to you," I protest.
It's too late to do anything about it now. It's better if we just leave it alone, 'kay?
I agree reluctantly before turning my attention to my book. Unfortunately , after reading the entire section on Roman gods-which is pretty freaking huge-I'm still no closer to figuring out how to get rid of Janus' power. I shut my book in annoyance and yawn.
"Welp, that was no help," I say. "I'm going to bed."
"Already?" Lucifer asks, glancing at the clock.
"Being unconscious takes a lot out of you," I joke. "'Night." I purposely avoid looking at Michael, partially because I don't want to have to deal with another memory, but mostly because the guy intimidates the crap out of me.
