Emerald: Nerves

She sat on the last inn's bed, concentrating with Mercury right beside her. She gasped as she got through to Salem, and she felt Mercury's hand on her shoulder.

Emerald could feel Salem smile. "Ah, Emerald. How is your mission going?"

"Team RNJR is a lot more trusting than we thought. Jade and Robin were pretty convincing, my lady."

Salem clapped her hands. "Good. Keep up the illusion until you reach Haven, and I will send Tyrian to help you get what we need."

Emerald nodded. "Thank you, my lady. We will not fail you."

Salem broke the link with one final sentence. "See that you do not."

Emerald fell back onto the bed with a sigh. "I really don't like all the stress that causes."

A touch startled her, and she looked down to see Mercury's hand on hers.

"I don't like seeing all the stress it causes you, either. But you held up great, and Salem didn't threaten our lives too harshly this time."

Emerald smiled, another blush spreading across her cheeks. "Whatever. At least it's over for now."

She flipped her black hair over her shoulder in an effort to mask the blush, but Mercury had seen it. Oh, Oum. Does he know?

Mercury nodded, and Emerald cursed herself mentally for not blocking the link before she said anything stupid.

It's not stupid, Emerald. I like you too.

Really? Or are you just saying that because you're...you?

Mercury smirked. "No."

He bent down and kissed her once softly. "And I am still me."

She could have screamed. Instead, she jumped off the bed and smirked at her partner. "I think our 'friends' are waiting outside at this point."

Mercury stood up as well, and Emerald kissed him before grabbing her backpack and walking out. "Now are you just going to stand there, or can we complete our mission?"

Her partner laughed, and there was a touch of flirtation in his voice as he walked out beside her. "Yes, ma'am."
