The winter air was brutal. It filled my lungs and burned my throat. My cheeks were so cold, they had turned a pale pink. I wasn't aware of my surroundings until something cold fell on my nose causing me to look up. Snow. Little white fluffs of snow was falling down from the sky. As I was looking up all my grief and anger went away. The edge of my lips curled up slightly. I saw a snowflake and wanted to catch it. With the winter winds, it was difficult. It kept flying around and eventually led me to the park where I finally caught it.

I giggled looking at the snowflake and feeling like a child again. I held it in my hands for a few moments before it melted away. I sighed and decided to head home. As soon as I turn around a snowball came flying at me and almost hit my face. I looked around for any sign of the perp. "Who's there?" I call out. There was no answer. I bent down low slowly and gathered as much snow as I could to make a snowball. Another snowball came flying at me and I was hit in the arm. I threw the snowball in the direction of where it came from hoping to hit someone. When I heard it hit the ground, I bolted home.

I climbed in my window and took off the multiple layers of clothing. My mother came in with a bit batch of cookies and hot chocolate. "This is why I love you!" I sighed happily. I took a mug and a few cookies. That's when I noticed the envelope. It was a dirty baby blue colour and seemed pretty small. "Is this for me?" I asked. My mother nodded. I put my mug down on my dresser and open the envelope. Inside was a card and two Forget-Me-Not flowers. I took my time admiring the simple flowers and set the by a picture of my mother and me. I pulled the card out of the envelope being careful not to wrinkle or rip it. Then I read it.

"I give you this one thought to keep-

I am still with you- I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush

I am the swift, uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight

I am the soft stars that shine at night

Do not think of me as gone-

I am with you still- in each new dawn."

A single tear escaped my eye and I rushed to wipe it away. "Is this from m-my real mom?" I asked in a low husky voice trying not to break down. My adoptive mother nodded slowly. She opened her mouth to say something, but I hugged her before she could ruin the moment. I whispered a little "Thank you" in her ear and took the rest of the cookies from her, to bring about the end of the moment. I smiled and laughed then sat on my bed eating the cookies and sipping the hot chocolate.
