I asked Jack so many questions about him. I still couldn't grasp the concept of this whole thing. We were in my room talking. Jack was leaning against the bed post while I was under the covers trying to keep warm and not get any sicker. My mom had left to the store to buy stuff. She wouldn't tell me what though.
My room was still cull of snow, but not as much anymore. Some of it had melted and more of it I threw out the window. After asking the winter spirit so many questions, we decided to get to know each other through a fun game. Jack suggested that was have a snowball fight or go ice skating but I refused to go since I was sick.
"I don't want to get sicker than I am already. Can't we do something that doesn't have to do with the outside world and the cold?"
"Well, what do you wanna do?" I looked around my room and couldn't spot anything for us to do. I shrugged and we finally admitted defeat.
"How about," I said, "we schedule something for us to do for another time when I'm not sick."
"Fine. How about in exactly one week at 4?"
"Sure, I don't think I have anything planned." My phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered it and recognized the voice almost immediately. David was calling me! I don't know how he got my number, but that didn't matter now. All I cared about was that a cute nice guy was calling me.
David called asking about my disappearance at school and asked if I was feeling alright. I told him that I was fine and I was a bit sick. He then asked me out on a date exactly one week from now at 4. David mentioned going out of town for the holidays, so he wanted to spend some time with me before he left.
"Oh, I don't know. I already have plans that day with an old friend of mine." I said disappointingly. I didn't mention Jack's name or that he was the winter spirit of fun. If I had, I would've sounded way crazy, but then I could just blame my ailment.
"Well, that's the only time I'm free. If you change your mind, I'll be at the coffee shop. You could bring your friend if you want, I won't mind."
"I'll let you know if I can make it. See ya at school."
"Bye." I hung up the phone and laid flat on my bed sighing happily. I, honestly, really liked this boy. He seemed really cool with me not being able to make plans and didn't mind if I brought a friend. I was so happy he called and in my own little day dream that I almost forgot Jack was here. It wasn't until the white-haired teen and I were face to face. I apologized and we went back to talking. Though Jack didn't know about much that I was saying, he listened and seemed really interested in everything I said. Things like electronics, bands, and other things that were high-tech, he had no clue as to what they were. He understood what phones were and a T.V was, but things like computers, radios, and cars seemed pretty foreign to him. I guess it was because he lived when none of this existed. At times it was frustrating trying to explain what these things were and how they worked.
"UUUHHHGG!!!! IT'S LIKE TALKING TO MY GRANDMOTHER!!!!" I groan.
Jack laughed, "Well, I am over 700 years old."
"Well you act like a child." I said smiling. We continued talking and got into the topic of other fictional beings like Santa or the Easter Bunny. I told him that I still secretly believed in Santa, but not the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy. Sandman was still someone I believed in as well. I always had good dreams so I always knew he was somewhere out there. Outside I heard my mom pull up in the driveway. I raced to the front door and opened it. She came in tracking snow everywhere she stepped and bags in her hands. I helped her with the bags and asked about what she bought. Before I was able to take a peek, my mom smacked my hands and told me that it was for dinner. I raised my hands up in defense and walked over to the counter and sat down. Jack floated nearby and kept close. At first I was worried that she might freak out about a cute white-haired boy floating in the kitchen, but then I remembered that nobody can see him unless they believed which, to be honest, is pretty stupid.
"Well, I have made plans with a friend exactly one week from now at 4."
"Do I know this friend?" My mom asked.
"Umm... No. H- She! Is new and shy. She transferred here on Monday." I stutter.
"Oh, really? What's her name?"
"Her name is, umm..." I thought for a while, "Jackie?" I say questionably. "Yeah, her name is Jackie."
"Ok." My mom chuckled. "You know if it's a boy, you don't have to worry. Just don't go doing things you're going to regret." She winked.
"Ew, gross, Mom! We just met!" I playfully hit her arm and laugh. I could hear Jack snickering beside me and tried my very best not to look sternly at him otherwise my mom would think I'm getting mad at the sink. I went back to my room and got comfortable on my bed. I was still feeling a bit sick, but not that much anymore. I was starting to feel drained, so I asked that Jack keep it down for a bit so I could take a nap.
"Yeah, sure." He said. I thanked him and rested my head on the pillow only to shoot straight up again facing the white-haired boy. He gave a small laugh and said, "Don't worry. I'll still be here when you wake up," as if he had read my mind. I calmly laid my head back down and drifted to sleep. That night I realized there was someone else I believed in... The Boogeyman.
