Karren’s pov

I woke with a start. I looked around wondering where I was. Then I remembered I was in the hospital. My shoulder started to sting from the bullet wound. I slowly put my head back on the pillow and shut my eyes.

Time skip

“Well you look comfortable.” A voice said in the darkness. I smiled as I opened my eyes to see Logon standing at the end of my bed.

“Says the one who can leave when ever they want.” I replied. He smiled back.

“Here, I bought you these.” He said bringing a box out from behind his back. It was a box containing some of my favourite chocolates and put it in front of me.

“Oh you shouldn’t have.” I said, blushing a little at this show of kindness, “Thank you.” I looked into his eyes and saw his conflicting emotions. I could see concern, anger, sadness and self-hatred.

“Logon, are you beating yourself up over what happened?” I asked.

“It’s my fault. If I had not been with you, this would never have happened. You getting shot is on my shoulders.” He sighed, slumping down in the visitor seat, “I nearly got you and Triss killed, and that’s not counting all the others. I was nearly your death! For crying out loud, Karren, I could have ended your life!”

“It’s all right Logon I would have hung out with you anyway. Mate, I’m in the bloody army! I face death almost every day! If you blame yourself for this, you’ll end up blame yourself for anything that happens to me.” I said back.

“If you hang out with me, you could lose loved ones. I’m sorry, I think it would be safer if you didn’t see me to often.” He replied.

“Logon, don’t do that. I’m going to get hurt any way. I want to hang out with you. It’s you’re not just a friend, I love you! I have ever since you stood up for me at school!” I almost shouted in the heat of the moment. Logon’s head snapped up.

“You, love me?” he asked, sounding surprised. My hands flew to my mouth.

“Oh my god, I didn’t mean to say that.” I stammered realising what I’d just said. Logon stood and moved over to me.

“It’s alright, Karren. I, I love you too.” He said quietly, hugging me, “that’s why I stood up for you.”. I relaxed. I hugged him back. He stepped back,

“The general is planning the next meeting of the unit tonight.” He said

“How am I going to go?” I asked, “I’m hospitalised.”

“That’s the point. The meeting is here.” Logon replied, “We will, of course, be in civilian cloths.” He held my hand, “The whole unit is worried. Though you’ve only been I it for a week, your still part of the family.”

“Does this always happen if one of you are injured?” I asked smiling.

He smiled back, “Yes.” There came a knock at the door.

“Thought I’d find you here.” Triss said walking in. I smiled at her. Her dry humour, I had learnt, simply hid her concern.

“Oh hello Triss. I was planning to walk out yesterday but the free food here is alright.” I replied as she walked over.

“has anything happened whilst I was gone?” she asked. I looked at Logon, giving him a knowing smile. He smiled back. Triss saw this and her mouth dropped.
