Chapter 2

A day in the life of a buckgirl

Willie's pov

She felt the most comfortable being at the lodge so me, her, and Korie slept at the lodge for the night. In the morning, I woke up and got ready for buck commander. I wonder if she wants to go with us. Korie walks out and hands me adoption papers she printed off online. I quickly sign them and kiss her. The guys arrived here, slow since it's morning and they aren't awake. I shake her awake. "Do you want to go hunting?" She smiles. "I love hunting. Let's go." I smile big and dress her in camo.

We were in the deerstand. She is super pumped and sitting on the edge of her seat. I love having this little girl around. I smile and pat her head. She smiles up at me. "Thank you, Willie... Um... Can I call you dad?" I smile. "I'm glad you want to call me dad." She smiles. "Thanks." I hug her tight. A few hours later, we have three kills to haul back in the truck. When we get to the lodge, everyone else is here, already talking about their kills. "This little youngster caught three today." I say, hoisting her up on my shoulder. All the buckmen cheer for her and I've never seen her so cheery and happy. She slides off my shoulder and runs around high fiving everyone. "Hey boys let's get this party started!" Luke shouts, turning on the stereo. "That's my boy." Jason says high fiving him. I roll my eyes with a smile and sit down. I love having a little tomboy daughter. She sits beside me, trying to catch her breath. Suddenly the music stops.

Huh? "Why'd the music stop daddy?" He scratches his beard with a smile. "Let's find out, shall we?" He says, hoisting me on his shoulder again. We walk over to the enormous, warm fireplace. The roaring flames illuminating the room with a soft warm glow. Jason and Luke sat on the bricks, guitars in their hands. "Time for a little band jam." Luke says, smiling and tuning his guitar. "We do this alot." Daddy says setting, me down.

She stares at us with the biggest eyes. "Luke what are we doing?" "Um.... How about pink houses man." Aw Mellencamp. One of my favorites. Willie pulls a chair up for her. "There's a black man with a black cat in a black neighborhood, he's got an interstate runnin' through his front yard. Ya know he thinks he's got it so good and there's a woman in the kitchen, cleanin' up evenin' slop and he looks at her and says...." Luke sings. I pick it up. "Hey darlin' I remember when you could stop a clock." We both sing the chorus. "Ain't that America. Home of the free, yeah. Little pink houses for you and me oh for you and me! I open my eyes, about to start the second verse when I can see her mouthing the words. "You know Mellencamp?" She blushes. "My daddy used to play him before bed all the time. I learned just about all his songs." Wow. I wonder what happened to her parents. Willie hugs her. Man, he's gonna make a great father for that girl. And Korie will make one great mom for her. "Could you guys sing Country music Jesus by Eric Church?" That's strange. We've never sang today's country here. Always the old stuff. "Ready Luke?" I ask anyway. He's definitely caught off guard too but trying not to show it.

She sits on the couch as the boys play music. I know just what I'm getting her for Christmas.
