Chapter 17

Trying

Miranda's pov

After two weeks of strenuous studying, I finally remastered sign language. Although I hate that I have no memory of the people I once called my family. I decided to look through old boxes of my stuff. See if maybe that could trigger my memories. I found most of my old stuff boxed up in the basement so I was down there looking through it. I found a piece of paper with the letter H+M on it. "Hunter." I whisper breathless. I get a chilling feeling and open the letter. Dear Miranda, One day I wanna marry you. You gave a chance on the new disabled boy in town. I'll never forget how lucky I am. I'll never stop loving you. You're such  smart friendly loving girl. Why you wanna be with a deaf boy like me is shocking but I'm so glad you do. Yours forever, Hunter. Wow! I hate that I forgot us. He's such a sweet boy! I open another box and find a red scarf. I'm confused. "Who's..." My voice trails off as I try in vain to remember. "What're you doing?" I squeal in surprise. "Dad." I say turning around. "I'm trying to spark my memories. I hate that I don't remember my family!" I break down in tears. He quickly walks downstairs and wraps me in a hug. "Shh shh don't cry." He says. I sigh. He tilts my chin up and brushes the tears from my cheeks. "Now you've got a boy upstairs, desperately worried about you. I think it's time you pay him a visit." He smiles, tiredly. I smile too. "Thanks dad." We share a hug and I race upstairs. Hunter was walking back and forth with all my uncles worried too. I run over and hug the frightened teenager. He turns and sees me. He hugs me back. He signs, "I love you." I may not remember before but I'm ready to make new memories with the boy I love. "I love you too." I sign back. He smiles, tearful. He puts a hand on my cheek and pulls me in for a kiss which feels beyond amazing.

*later*

"I didn't think you'd want to bother to learn sign language again." He signs slowly since I'm not as up to par as I used to be. "Of course I would. You're such a sweet guy and I'd like to get to know you again." I sign back. He smiles and hugs me. Dad calls my name and tells me it's time to come inside.

Willie's pov

It pains me. She's not as lively as she used to be. She's not as smartassy anymore. Korie hugs me. "She's still our little girl." She says patting my hand. I nod and lay down. No matter what she'll always be our little girl.

*a few days later*

I groggily go downstairs and look at my phone. I rub my eyes then see a text from Adam saying, "Call me, big news." That was 2 hours ago. I shrug and pour a cup of coffee then I call him. "Hey I was wondering when you'd wake up." Adam says laughing. I force a tired smile. "What's the big news?" "Meet me here at my house and bring Miranda and Hunter. I'm waiting for the rest of the guys to wake up." I shrug and down my coffee. "Miranda wake up! Road trip!" I call up the stairs. She's probably still asleep. I walk upstairs and see her curled up asleep in her boyfriend's arms. I wake her and Hunter up and wait for them to get ready then we drive to Adam's ranch house. Adam texts me.

A: Only us adults. I've got a surprise for Hunter.

W: OK.

"Wait out here guys." She signs it to Hunter and they wait by my truck. I walk inside. Adam was excited. Luke and Jason were asleep. Too early for night playing singers. Where's Tombo?" "Not here yet." Adam says. He wakes the boys up when Tombo walks in. "So what's this about, man, I'm exhausted." Luke says, closing his eyes again. "I've been doing some research and I have found a surgery that can help Hunter hear again!" I stare at him shocked. In fact all of us are. "As you all know, Hunter's parents are really poor and I really want to do this for them. So, what do ya say we pool some money together and pay for the surgery!" "I'm in!" I say. Tombo nods. "Me too." "Count us in too." Jason says patting Luke's back who's back to sleep. We all laugh. "What? We were up til 3 in the morning playing shows all over Nashville to promote for the awards." He says shrugging. I smile and cross my arms. "I can't wait to do this." "Let's get the kids." Adam says smiling.
