It was sunset when I first saw her. She was sitting on a pile of boulders under the bridge staring into the cotton candy skies. The hair on her head was the color of dark chocolate and her eyes were like emeralds. She wore a long sleeve dress the color of blood red that fell to her knees. A pair of tall black stockings covered her small calves. There were a pair of black combat boots on her feet for easy walking. I felt like I was looking at an angel.
I went over to her, as I was curious as to what universe she had drifted into,
"Um excuse me miss.."
It was then that she snapped out of her daydream in the sky,
"Who are you?" She asked.
"Oh I'm sorry allow me to introduce myself, my name is Axel. What is your name?"
".....Esperanza." She responded quietly.
There was something about her that I couldn't quite put my finger on. She was quiet but didn't seem too bothered that I had approached her. So I decided that I would try to get to know her a little more.
"That's a lovely name. So, where are you from?"
She didn't seem comfortable with this question. I wonder why.
"Ok, well are you from here?"
"I just moved here."
"Oh well would you like for me to give you a tour of the city?"
"I mean I guess that would be nice." She replied.
"Great! I'll meet you back here at noon tomorrow, sound good?"
"Yeah I can do that."
"Awesome! I'll see you tomorrow, goodbye Esperanza."
"Goodbye Axel."
Esperanza said as she went back to her galaxies in that crispy pink and purple sky.
As I went back to my apartment I couldn't stop thinking about the aura that Esperanza possessed. She was a beautiful young girl. I decided I wasn't going to think about it too much, as there were other things that needed to be done. That's when I got the call from my partner,
"Hey Axel I need you down by the bridge asap there are people jumping off into the river."
Once I hung up I grabbed my black trench coat and black fedora and headed out to the bridge. I met my partner at the bridge and I saw what she was talking about. Multiple people were throwing themselves off the bridge into the river.
I looked at my partner,Constance, and asked her,
"Do you know why they are doing this?"
She shook her head in response. Then she began to write down notes on her phone. We were not humans. We were detectives from another universe assigned to study people.
"Well I guess the only way to find out is by getting a closer look right?"
Constance couldn't believe and told me I was crazy to think such a thing was a good idea. That's when I asked if she had any better ideas, but she just crossed her arms as a way to signal that she didn't.
"Ok, so I'll go over and analyze one person hanging from the bridge."
Constance gave me an annoyed look before moving out of the way for me to get a closer look at one of the humans.
I started to watch a woman, she had short blonde hair and looked to be in her late 20s. The expression on her face looked....sad. It frustrated me how I couldn't figure out the cause of her depressed state and how it drove her to this state. As I continued to watch she suddenly jumped. I didn't watch her fall, but I did hear the crash.
I ran over to my partner to tell her that I may have figured out why these troubled souls are taking away their lives. She asked me what it was and I began to explain it to her,
"Here's my theory, as I was analyzing the woman she had a sad expression on her face before she jumped."
"So?"
"Think about it Constance, she was sad and when you jump from this height into the water it can kill a person."
"So you think that they came here to kill themselves?"
"Yes, the reason as to how they became so sad I'm not sure of."
She looked at me in annoyance as I was the one who seemed to always be solving the cases. I could see this and told her how she could solve the cases to if she would just take more chases. But this made her even more angry.
"Don't try and make me feel guilty."
"Ok fine. I'm going to head back to my apartment from here, you probably should too."
"Fine, but we need to meet tomorrow to discuss what happened tonight so that we can give boss a full investigation."
Axel began to scratch the back of his neck,
"Yeah about that, I'm meeting someone tomorrow at noon."Constance looked at him with confusion,
"Please don't tell me you've exposed yourself to a human and are now going on a date with them.""No not exactly 1) it's not a date I'm giving her a tour of the city since she's new and 2) there's something about her that makes me feel like she may not really be human."
That's when she began to go on a rant about how just because I "think" this girl isn't a human doesn't mean she really isn't human. I tried calming her down by telling her how if worst comes to worst then I can wipe her memory of ever meeting me. She scoffed at how I still thought this plan would work,
"If you say so. But don't get your hopes up that she's really not a normal human being."
I smiled at her annoyed remark,
"I'm sure everything will go smoothly, now I'm going back to my apartment to get some sleep; you should do the same.""Ok fine I'll be working."
"Don't work yourself to death though, goodnight Constance."
"Goodnight Axel."
