The night before the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona, Spain was full of anticipation and anxiety. You knew how much Phichit wanted to beat everyone but he was far too nice to say it to their faces. The truth is, he would be equally as happy if someone else won, especially his best friend.
You wanted to calm his nerves, so you decided to treat him to a date on the town with a secret little surprise hidden away that made you very giddy. The lights were twinkling as you walked with Phichit down the narrow street where the local vendors were showcasing their products. You stopped multiple times to take pictures together and it was continuing to be a quaint evening together.
"Is that Yuri and Viktor?" Phichit suddenly blurted, pointing to a jewelry store.
Your head whipped over and your mouth dropped open in an awestruck expression as you saw the two men at the ring counter, gazing past the glass and at the gold bands inside.
"They're already so married," you said fondly, squeezing Phichit's arm.
"Yuri is so much happier with Viktor. I hope I get to name one of their kids!" Phichit exclaims wistfully.
You laughed and subtly directed Phichit into the direction of where your gift was located without him noticing. You pointed out random things on the street to keep his attention away from the shop at the end of the block.
"Phichit," you said to pull that attention toward you, "I have something for you."
"What is it?" Phichit beamed with shining eyes.
"I know you had to leave your hamsters back in Detroit before you left and you've been working so hard with skating and traveling meaning you can't take care of one, but since the finals are tomorrow, I thought of the perfect good luck charm," you mused, cocking your head to the shop waiting right in front of you.
Phichit smiled wider and looked over to the pet store with puppies seen through the window. You felt him kiss your cheek before rushing off to the door and hurrying inside. You casually strolled in after him, then witnessed the young man leaning over a transparent box of hamsters.
Adoration flourished in your chest as you observed Phichit's captivating features. There was nothing you loved more than being around him because his attitude was the most precious and enthralling thing in the world. Anyone could fall in love with him after one conversation because of how bright he shined.
"I want this one!" Phichit rejoiced with a small, gray hamster in his palms.
You slid your credit card onto the counter for the woman to charge while you proceeded over to pick out a small carrier and enough food for it until you got back to Thailand. You loved every minute of clear joy Phichit displayed and it made you want him to win tomorrow even more because you knew how much happier he would be.
You took your card back on the way out and Phichit couldn't stop gushing about the hamster and the amount of gratitude he felt toward your actions as you walked hand-in-hand down the street.
"Thank you so much, Love. This means more than any gold medal ever could," he said.
You brushed it off with a chuckle. "We both know that's not true. You can have so many hamsters, but a gold medal would mean so much more to you."
"It's true that I could have many hamsters, but this is the one you got for me and it means so much more. You always think of me before yourself and I am truly grateful for everything you do for me," Phichit specified sweetly.
You moved to push your lips against his and you reached up to graze your fingertips over his smooth caramel skin. You felt him smile and it made you laugh and pull away. That typically happened because your relationship was very playful and you could easily joke with each other, which made moments like these hard not to lose your composure at.
"I really hope you win tomorrow," you whispered, staring into his dark orbs.
"Me too, but it's okay if I don't," Phichit assured. "I know I still have a few years before I have to retire and each year is a new beginning and opportunity."
"You are literally the most precious gift to the skating industry ever," you responded affectionately
Phichit blushed. "Come on, (Y/N). I hate when you say stuff like that."
"No you don't," you said.
"I just believe that. It's what I kept telling Yuri, too. He gets so down on himself and it's not good for his self-esteem."
"That doesn't surprise me at all. Like I said, most precious man on the ice who cares more for his friends' mental health than increasing competition," you responded. "I mean, maybe your words gave him the push to accept Viktor's coaching offer."
"I think he had it in himself, honestly," Phichit insisted.
You cupped his face in your hands. "More precious than gold."
Phichit blushed harder and you tilted his head to press a kiss to his forehead. You snickered at his face and took his arm to continue striding through town. You eventually made it back to the hotel after getting food with the other skaters at a cafe. You each showered and played with the hamster for a while before laying on the mattress to detox from the busy day.
"I can't wait to get back to Thailand," Phichit commented with a tired yawn.
"Why?" you questioned, propping your head up on your palm as you shifted on your side.
"We'll get to spend more time together without worrying about skating. Even when we were in Detroit, it was mostly about my skating, and now we have some time to focus on things you like and what we're planning in the future," he answered after turning his head to look at you.
You intertwined your hands and held them up between your resting bodies. "That sounds perfect. Whatever we do will be amazing as long as we're together."
"I know," Phichit muttered as he drifted off to sleep.
You dropped his hand to gently brush back his bangs. You knew how much not only you wanted Phichit to win but how much he deserved it. He had such a stunning heart and he owned yours as well. Come tomorrow, you hoped he could accomplish what he worked so hard toward.
But what you don't know about is the special surprise of his own that he plans for you. Phichit was touched by your gift and it made him truly know that his decision is the right one to make. Whether he wins or loses, he knows he will have you in the end and a gift presented in the form of a ring to let you know you are what makes him a real winner.
