The blowing wind and driving snow made the long walk back to the Command Post a miserable one. Neither one of the gems spoke, the storm made it too hard to hold a conversation. Instead, Peri stuck as close to Onyx's side as possible, often times letting her friend lead the way through the deep snow. Time seemed to drag by at an agonizing pace. With each step towards the command post came new challenges. Peri found it hard to get much traction in some areas and to avoid slipping she often wound up grabbing Onyx which usually caught the gem of guard. Occasionally she would yelp her discontent as the green gem would grab onto her to avoid falling. There were only a few instance where both gems fell in the snow. Usually it was Peri that fell taking Onyx with her. The blue gem did her best to make light of the situation and laughed at her friend. Peri usually just grumbled. They eventually made it back to Command Post 15 where Tourmaline, an apprentice under the guidance of Onyx, was waiting for them.
Watermelon Tourmaline, better known simply as Tourmaline, was a quiet gem in her own respects. Her sole purpose had been to serve the guards of the courts, but seldom did her rough owners pay much respect for such a fine gem. She escaped to the safety of Onyx who, at the time, had needed someone to be a researcher for ongoing experiments. From this safety Tourmaline really came to her own, finding herself in the little things she did. Onyx put value to her life and appreciated the gem for what she was, not the work she could tirelessly do. The gem was above most things, beautiful. Her pale green skin was much lighter than Peri's. Her long hair, pulled into a high ponytail with braids which fell over her shoulders, was a burgundy color. She wore a long, flowing, floor length dress made of various shades of deep pink, matching the natural colors of her gem. Around her waist was a dark green sash which highlighted the diamond shaped green gem on her stomach. Her eyes were a dark green as well giving her a beautiful appearance, though perhaps more beautiful than her appearance was her gentle spirit.
Tourmaline warmly welcomed Onyx and Peri back to the command post where she was eagerly waiting for them. Up in the observation tower, the highest room in the multiple story building, Tourmaline had a heater running to warm up the weary travelers. Peri couldn't have been a happier gem as she snuggled up by the heater watching the snow fall outside. Through the night Onyx and Tourmaline took turns monitoring the storm and trying to restore more power to the post. Peri all the while sat with her broken radio on her lap watching its lifeless screen for any signs of hope. As dawn drew nearer, the power began to die out a bit. Tourmaline and Onyx left to investigate leaving Peri to storm watch alone.
