In the maze, it was pitch-black. Annabeth stumbled, fell, got up again. There seemed to be no end to the passageway she and Piper ran in. Far away, she heard Mimas' frustrated scream.
"I'll get you!" He cried, then a cracking sound was heard. The shattering of the stone passageway? The statue she had seen silhouetted against the light of the entrance, broken?

Annabeth was terrified. Her brain, the organ she depended on most, wasn't working. She couldn't calculate the distance they'd run, how far away Mimas seemed to be. She couldn't even think properly, logic driven away by fear. She held onto Piper's hand like a lifeline, the one thing preventing her from completely breaking down. They ran, sprinted down corridor after corridor, turning right, left, left - dizzy and nerves frazzled, Annabeth collapsed, panting, as her sense slowly returned. The quiet shing of her friend's pocketknife rang in her ears, then silence.

The silence was broken by a whisper - "Annabeth, I see a light."
"Piper, you're not dying, are you?"
"No, look. Over there."
A gasp, stifled by the realization that Mimas was hunting for them. Too late, Annabeth clasped her hand over her mouth. Loud footsteps resounded through the maze, and the two girls hastily stood up and began to run toward the light.

They reached the end of the hallway, emerging into a different, brightly lit room. Over the archway, a stone statue was visible, and Annabeth's still-jumbled brain vaguely recalled a Greek god. Another statue, this one bronze, stood near the center of the room - Ares, the Greek god of war, chained to the ground. Piper stepped toward the bronze statue, and almost immediately a gust of wind whispered in the girls' ears. Kill the giant, it seemed to say, destroy him.

Annabeth looked around the room, sharp gray eyes scanning the walls for anything useful. Her brain started working, albeit slowly, and she began piecing together a plan. Admittedly, it wasn't a very good plan, but it would give her and Piper a fighting chance, and a chance was all they needed.

"Piper," she hissed quietly, "can you bring that pile of rope over to here?" Her friend did as asked, obediently walking over to the pile of rope sitting forlornly in the corner. Annabeth looked at the stone statue over the archway, calculating distance, trajectory, where they'd have to apply force for it to work. The statue was cracked, half a foot of stone holding it to the archway. A long, jagged crack had formed along the top of the statue, and Annabeth took advantage of the situation. She looped the rope around the top of the statue, told Piper where to stand and how hard she should pull on the rope, and when.

As Mimas' heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor, the two girls stood on either side of the arch, ready for action. Annabeth quickly counted down, signaling to Piper - now!

They pulled on their respective sides of the rope just as Mimas entered the room, and the stone gave way - the crack spread, splitting the statue from the archway. A deafening crash filled the room, and Mimas twitched once, twice, and moved no more.

"Annabeth, we just killed someone," Piper's voice broke the silence, quavering and on the verge of hysteria.

Silence filled the air once more as the weight of what the two girls had just done filled sunk into their minds.
