Chapter 2: Next Door

I had been able to avoid him all day, hadn’t I?

I guess I couldn’t avoid at least one class with him, and well, I guess I’ve been forced into an hour and ten minutes in world history spent with Robbie Kay directly behind me, and plopped right next to poor Danielle.

I was next to Zoey Rosales, the girl I had met back at lunch.  Another one of the girls, Natalia was also in this class, right behind Robbie.  And next to her was a boy named Ben Jesky, a pothead BMXer who was always seen hooking up with random girls at the skate park.  Even better?  Best friends with Robbie.

“Hey.”

I sighed, immediately recognizing the British slur.  I turned my chair to face him.  “What?” I hissed.

“Get Zoey’s attention.”

Danielle had rolled her eyes and continued taking notes hastily as Zoey’s chair swiveled to ram into his desk legs, jolting his own chair into the desk behind him.  “Do not talk to me.  I don’t want you to mess up my senior year,” she whispered harshly, “screw yourself.”

“Why when I’ve got a lady to my right?” he breathed mockingly, groping Danielle’s thigh.  She quickly scooted her chair to the end of her desk.

“What’s the story with you two?”  I asked, motioning to the two of them with my finger.

“Oh, this little lady and I?” he asked, throwing an arm around Danielle’s shoulder.  Her face had tensed and her eyes widened in shock.  She slammed her pencil into the desk and pushed him off.  “Don’t you touch me,” she muttered.

“Don’t be so tense, sweetheart,” he cooed.  “Arianna, I believe you asked me a question?”

“Uh yeah I did.  What’s going-“

“Drop it,” Danielle whispered, “check your phone.”

Robbie cocked an eyebrow and smirked as I pulled out my phone.

From: Danielle

Let me come over after school.  We can hang out and I’ll tell you what you need to know.

I looked up at her.  Her eyes were pleading, and in fact tears have rimmed them and casted little dewy shadows under her lashes.

Robbie interjected.  “Secrets secrets are no fun, secrets secrets-“

“Oh my GOD just shut up!”  Zoey hissed.  “Robbie you make me so sick.  I have a course to worry about.  Just because you’re a worthless castaway in this society doesn’t mean you gotta ruin it for everyone, k?”

Robbie pursed his lips together as his eyes emptied.  Quickly he shoved his notebook in his bag and started gathering his things. Then he stood up, gathering all attention, and stormed out of the room.

“What’s his problem?”  Zoey asked, bending her neck a little to peer out the door.

“I guess he’s a little sensitive?” I said uncertainly.  Either he’s hypocritical and can’t take in what he dishes out, or something she said hit close to home.

The professor had noticed Robbie’s departure and rose up from his desk to the passageway, clutching the doorknob with thick fingers.   “Mr. Kay!  You are in enough trouble already young man!  Get back in this classroom or march right into the principal’s office!”

The entire classroom sparked in hushed murmurs, until we heard the faint voice of Robbie’s response:

“Bite me.”
