chapter ii. FiRE

star (n.) a fixed luminous point in the night sky that is a large, remote incandescent body like the sun.

"so the sun
is a star"

"yes"

"and
I
am a star"

"no,
stella"

"everyone
told me,
I was"

"why"

"because,
apparently,
I was
worth
something;
like
a star"

"hm?"

"a star
shines
because,
it is strong"

"a star is
a ball
of gas"

"yet I
am a star?
like
the sun"

"no.
the sun,
stella,
is a ball of
flames"

I didn't reply.

I don't
like
it here,
locked,
deep
in the halls.

the old man;
weary,
he
called it a
"loony bin"

"you're
meant to be
a star"
they
all said.

"how
do I
become
a star?"
I asked.

I will be
like
the sun.

but
they
got mad--
again--
asked me
"why?"

they wondered,
why,
I had burned
my hands,
and arms

I had
held them
over
the flames.

"because,
I wanted
to be like
the sun;
a star"
