FLAMEHEART CHRONICLES : WILDCLAW

_._._._._._

CHAPTER 1: The Mission.

Crystal gazed at the solemn faces around her. They were all trusted. They were all skilled, but why were there so few volunteers?

She saw only two paws on the table although the table they were sitting at was nearly full and stretched to the other end of the hall. Crystal could see some nervous expressions on some faces as the candles on the table flickered with the cats' apprehension. The elements were often influenced by their emotions.

The mission was simple. Go to the human world for some time to spy on suspicious Black Claw activity. Maybe the 'human world' part was the problem. Such missions included undercover spying, maintaining a low profile and even socializing with Low-life loafers like strays, house cats or, Fauna forbid, alley cats.

But this mission was important. And the only ones that had volunteered were Mimi, an old tabby, and Broken tail who, obviously, had a broken tail. It wasn't that they weren't good. They were clever. But it would be easier for the cat if some human family took him/her in. Humans only took in cats that were cute and cuddly. She"d also heard that they preferred younger cats or kittens. She sighed, her piercing blue gaze roaming over her comrades.

It had been tough getting them together after the coronation of Fluffy as king. She knew she had to do something before the terrible happened. So she got some silver claws together to at least see that the nation did not descend to the point of street battles for a box of kibbles. The only reason Fluffy even got the throne was because of Midnight, a clever Black claw. Midnight knew what she wanted and knew how to get it. She was determined and dangerous.

This mission was brought up because Midnight had been sighted in New York with some of her cronies. She would never do that unless necessary. And that meant trouble.

But first, Crystal needed a cat. She turned to Mimi and Broken Tail.

"Both of you are capable and your offer is much appreciated." ,Lustre claws used a kind of telepathy to communicate with each other, "But I feel this assignment might be too...trivial for warriors with your extensive experience". They looked a bit put out but Crystal continued

"Why not give this chance to one of our youngsters...a way to prove their talent?"

A few raised an eyebrow at this. Crystal analyzed her options.

Oscar was trained and talented. His fluffy fur, blue eyes and calmness would make him attractive, but his technical talent was needed here.

Mia was adorable. But at the age of ten years, she was a bit too young and inexperienced.

Pluto was a prodigy, but he was arrogant and subtlety was not his strong suit. He was obviously eager for an assignment. Green eyes, grey fur...no, not him.

Ruby, while good looking would prefer to stay at the Mansion after her leg injury.

Artemis was perfect. Raven black fur, golden eyes and playful temperament, she would have no trouble finding someone to take her in. She also had experience in the human world as she had spent a month on the streets before the Lustre Claws found her. The death of her mother had hardened her a bit, and although she had been in Lustre Claw society for only a year, she had proven her loyalty and was trusted. Yes, she would do.

"Artemis, will you accept?" the black cat"s head snapped up. She looked like a cat burglar in a searchlight.

"Me?" she almost squeaked. Most of the others rolled their eyes when her whiskers began to smoulder.
