CHAPTER 4: Really tough spy stuff.
The house in which the Grace family lived, was on a quiet street. A mostly residential area with a few large buildings that had offices and stuff. They were significantly busy. But Artemis ignored them.
As soon as the girl went off to school and the father to work, the mother settled down on the couch, immersed in some humongous book. This gave Artemis the opportunity to slip out of the first storey window.
She jumped and landed softly. Most normal cats could actually do this, but with not as much ease. She slinked past the almost identical houses to the end of the street and crossed a couple of alleys to emerge on the next street, directly parallel to the previous and almost as boring. She scanned it up and down and reviewed the address she had been given, in her head. The houses looked almost the same.
Damn suburban architecture, she thought. Oscar had told her the house the Black Claws were using had a beige fence around the porch. She looked at the houses again and swore. Every bloody house had a beige porch fence.
‘Tut tut’ a voice said behind her and she whipped around in an instant.
She came face to face with another cat. It was definitely male, and a good looking one at that. He had blonde, glinting fur with black patches. An odd color for normal cats but some unique colors could be seen in Lustre Claws. He was sprawled lazily on top of the dumpster she was next to. He had spoken to her telepathically.
‘A Pretty kitty like you shouldn’t be using such language’ he purred, his eyes shut as if dozing ‘but then you shouldn’t be here in the first place’.
‘And exactly why shouldn’t I?’ Artemis asked, an eyebrow raised innocently. She hoped with all her heart he wasn’t a Black Claw scout. He just stretched lethargically and Artemis noticed his fur rippling over strong muscle and sinew. He may not have looked very active right then, but he obviously stayed in shape.
‘Like what you see?’ his lightly teasing voice startled her and she looked up to his face again. He had opened his eyes and was looking at her carelessly. They were bright blue, but she noticed that he had a ring of green near the edges of the eye. His appearance was definitely as intriguing as his presence, but not disarming enough to lose her wits.
‘I could ask you the same’ she replied as he openly gazed at her. He just hummed sleepily.
‘So, why shouldn’t I be here?’ she felt slightly nervous. She had no idea who this guy was and she had a feeling he was not a Silver Claw.
‘You know why’ he said and got to his feet ‘Black Claws do not take kindly to White clawed spies, even such delicate little kittens.’
‘Delicate little kitten?’ Artemis purred dangerously. If there was one thing she hated, it was being called weak. She was not a defenseless kitten anymore. The empty milk carton next to the blonde cat burst into fire. He didn’t flinch but raised his eyebrows in interest.
‘A Fire-user, eh? This should be interesting.’ He hopped off the dumpster and yawned, showing an impressive set of teeth.
‘Go on, then’ Artemis said. ‘Run to your brothers and tell them of the Silver Claw spy’
He shook his head amusedly ‘No’.
‘No?’ she repeated, feeling slightly confused. She was quite certain he was a Black Claw
‘I am a scout’ he admitted ‘but I’m not going to sell you out’
‘Why is that?’ Artemis was a bit unnerved now.
