Chapter 13: Unluck.

----------

Thud.

A knife buried itself two inches from Grint's head.

"I liked that door." Sarah Grace yelled as she flung a dagger again. It flew past Oscar but he ducked in time.

"Calm down." He said soothingly.

"Do you have any idea how old that is?"

"Very old?" Artemis suggested and the red head turned to her, looking livid.

The next dagger she flung straight at Artemis. Grint gasped. In that moment, he knew Artemis was too close to dodge it and it was spinning straight toward her face.

But it never touched her face. It stopped an inch from her nose. Her palms were together, the knife between them, the glinting tip directly pointed at her nose.

Everyone froze.

"Mom?" they turned to the girl on the stairs, "what is happening?"

"Our new cat needs my help." Sarah replied as she regained her composure. She put the knives down, carefully avoiding her husband's gaze. She turned to the cats

"Please give me a few minutes."

The cats took a moment to proccess the sudden change in her attitude. Oscar nodded at her.

"You can wait here, and fix my door."

Artemis looked reluctant but she nodded.

The Grace family went into another room. The three Silver nailed teens took a seat on the couch after putting the door back.

--------

"How long is this going to take?" Artemis half-whined. Oscar frowned at her.

"We could be the reason this family breaks up, Artie. Show some sensitivity."

"Sorry." She muttered, "But how could they not know? She should have told them."

An odd expression came over Oscar's face,

"We don't have the right to criticize someone's family. The two of us, least of all."

"I guess you're right." Artemis sighed.

He smiled at her, looking torn,

"You have no idea."

Artemis didn't understand his feelings, then she realized she didn't know who his father was either. She decided not to say anything.

A few seconds later, Grint spoke,

"Can you hear that?"

Artemis raised her eyebrow,

"You're eavesdropping on them?"

"No, I mean outside."

She cocked her head to one side and listened. She nodded.

"Rustling. Someone's there." She pointed to the left window.

She gestured to the boys to stay put and quietly walked over to the window. In one swift movement, she grabbed the intruder and pulled her into the room.

A blue haired girl tumbled unceremoniously to the floor. She sprang to her feet and rubbed her grazed palms. She looked at Artemis reproachfully.

"So much for my dramatic entrance, Artemis."

"Leila?" Artemis looked relieved, "What are you doing here?"

"Coming with you, of course. WildClaws have a part in this too."
