Chapter 6 : The Velum.
‘Really?’ Artemis cocked her head to the side, ‘League WildClaw. ’
‘Yup.’ Leila popped the P and nodded from the other end of the bed, ‘Cross my heart.’
Artemis snorted, ‘Oh, I believe you. That’s kinda why I’m taking everything you say with a pinch of salt.’
Leila shrugged, ‘I know you factions think of us as jokes-‘
‘Got that right.’
‘-But we’re not the hippies that everyone makes us out to be.’
‘Really?’ the black cat asked disbelievingly, ‘you irrationally want unconditional, undisturbed peace and love between two groups of feline warriors that have been at war since the Beginning for the smallest reasons. Not to mention the fact that one of these factions seems to repeatedly hatch plots to destroy any semblance of peace that graces this species now and then.’ Artemis took a breath, ‘Sounds pretty hippie to me.’
Leila had her eyebrows raised
‘That was quite a statement.’
‘Yeah…’ Artemis shook her head, ‘I won’t apologize for it for I have no proof that says otherwise.’
‘I suppose you don’t, but one day you will.’
‘I’ll apologize then.’ She stated, ‘But for now, I need to know what you’re doing here.’
‘The same as you, Artemis’, Leila got up and peeked out the window, leaning on the frame with her hands.
‘The Black Claws?’
She nodded, ‘we do not like to leave peace to chance.’
‘But I thought it wasn’t clearly endangering anything.’ Artemis frowned. Although she felt her assignment was not what it looked like, she didn’t think the WildClaws would think it was important enough to send their own spy. As far as she knew, they were harmless and peaceful, more Greenpeace than Secret Service.
‘It does not seem dangerous yet…’ Leila hesitated.
‘What?’, the cat asked ‘Then why are you here?’
‘Well…’ Leila seemed to be debating with herself on something. Then she nodded, ‘One of our most powerful Lords is a telepath and he had a…well, something like a premonition or just instinct that a certain BlackClaw was trying to do something, something big.’
‘Like what?’
‘Something to do with the Goddess.’
‘Like what?’
‘Something to do with a Velum.’
Artemis paused.
A Velum literally meant veil. But they were actually more like a gateway, a gateway to another dimension. No one ever spoke of the name of this place, but almost everyone had heard of it. This dimension was the supposed birthplace of the gods. And it was said that only souls that had finished their time in this dimension travelled to it. It was speculated that the gods returned there during the Fade.
If Artemis didn’t doubt them before, she definitely doubted them now.
‘What else?’ Artemis asked sweetly, ‘they recruiting Unicorns?’
Leila frowned at this, ‘I didn’t believe it either, but a…a certain…informant gave us evidence to corroborate this information.’
‘How reliable is your informant?’
