Chapter 5: The Temporary Guest.
---
‘I’m home!’ Haley yelled.
Her mother poked her head out from the kitchen and smiled at Leila, Haley’s best friend as she shut the door. She wiped her hands on her apron as she walked toward them.
‘No need to yell.’ She grinned ‘but what brings you here today, Leila?’
‘School project, Mrs.Grace.’ Leila replied with her trademark wide-lipped grin, ‘I hope you don’t mind.’
‘Of course not, I hope you’ll stay for dinner. I made some chocolate mousse thing for dessert and I want some opinions.’
‘Sure. My mom is out anyway.’
Haley dropped her bag carelessly on the table and flopped onto the couch, closely followed by her friend.
‘I’m tired.’ She declared and her mother shook her head as she made her way back to the kitchen. She called over her shoulder
‘You two can go to your room if you want. I’ll call you when your dad gets home.’
‘Sure, mum.’
Haley made no move to get up.
‘Come on, Lazy-brain’ Leila stood and stretched her lanky body, ‘We have a report on the American Civil War for Mr.Bennet to get started on.’
‘Oh joy.’ Haley fake-exclaimed.
‘You know they say he has an ancient samurai sword he uses on kids he doesn’t like’, Leila looked at her pointedly.
Haley groaned and muttered something about where exactly Mr.Bennet could stick his ancient Samurai sword. She got up anyway, dragged her feet and started climbing the stairs to her room, ‘Come on, then.’
‘Right behind you.’ Leila replied in a vague voice and Haley turned to her. Leila had always had a brisk, military kind of voice. It matched her confident behavior.
‘You alright?’ Haley asked. The taller girl nodded abstractly and, Haley noticed in surprise, sniffed the air. She gaped. What had gotten into Leila? She sniffed the air once more, her eyes glazed. But before Haley could ask anything, she snapped out of it and looked at her.
‘Keep going, that report is not gonna write itself.’ Leila chastised, flipping her dyed blue-ish hair to the side.
‘Why were you acting like a nose-blocked bloodhound?’
Leila’s expression faltered for just a moment. If Haley hadn’t been looking intently at her, she would have missed it entirely. But she was back to normal before she could register the hesitation. She smiled
‘I smelt your mom’s mousse’, she replied.
‘And I smell burning blue cheese.’ Haley frowned. ‘That excuse of a mousse has been in the fridge since morning.’
‘Oh,’ Leila scrunched up her nose ‘then what is that?’
Haley sniffed the air.
‘Chicken,’ She stated, shaking her head ‘you smelt chicken and thought it was…never mind. Let’s go.’
Leila nodded again and followed Hayley, but not before glancing around the house and sniffing again. She smiled, showing slightly pointed teeth. Her eyes blinked once and her pupils were slits on a green-yellow background. She shut and opened her eyes again and they were back to normal. She let out a small purr and then turned and hurried up the stairs that Haley had climbed.
