PART 2
Artemis had almost fallen asleep on the couch when she remembered that she hadn’t contacted HQ. She sighed and unraveled her lithe limbs. It took a couple of seconds to wriggle out of the collar but she did it and stood still for a moment. No sounds from the humans. She pressed the blue button and prepared to wait but surprisingly enough, the message Connecting… came for just a second before the image flickered and gained clarity.
But this time, it wasn’t Oscar. She was looking at a dark grey tom who was busily typing at the keyboard and barely looked up at her to ask
‘Artemis Moore?’ he had a rather deep voice that startled her.
‘Uh…Yeah.’ She stammered, ‘where’s Oscar?’
The grey tom lifted his eyes to her. They were a bright grass green.
‘Oscar was tired.’ He said shortly, ‘Is this inconvenient?’
‘No…’ she squinted at him, ‘you’re…Grint, aren’t you?’
He nodded, ‘your message?’
‘Uh…’
Grint tilted his head, ‘Is there a problem? I’m afraid your call is slightly late, so I’d prefer a faster pace.’
If Artemis could blush, she would have but she shook her head and said hesitantly,
‘I need to talk to Crystal.’
He raised his eyebrows, not just at her request but also her apparent ease at calling the Quean Nova by her first name.
‘The Quean is extremely busy-‘
‘I know.’
‘And I would be happy to take a message…’
‘I know.’ Artemis frowned, ‘but I will speak to her.’
Grint hesitated, ‘I cannot assure that she would consent to see you.’
Artemis now eyed him a bit coldly. She knew Crystal would not deny her and she knew that she had to tell Crystal what she had learnt. She replied tightly
‘Tell her who calls her and tell her it is Important.’
She could see Grint debating something, but he finally nodded,
‘Hold on. The comms are down.’
‘Then go.’
He took off out of view and she relaxed.
Grint, she mused. She had seen him around very few times and had often heard of his looks from other cats her age. He was fifteen, same as her and Oscar. But compared to Oscar, he was a bit more…rugged.
Artemis perked her ears as a sound reached her senses. She stiffened. It came from the girl’s room. She looked at the screen. She had to tell Crystal but she couldn’t afford to get caught now. She heard the girl’s footsteps leave her room and descend the stairs.
She nearly groaned with frustration and looked from the screen to the door of the living room. She could hear the sound of an approaching party through the screen and she knew the girl would enter soon. Too soon.
Her reflexes kicked in just as the door creaked open.
