Chapter 12:
“So, the first piece?” Moira asked when Artemis was finished, “That is why you’re here?”
Her voice sounded closed and controlled, like a robot. It made the fur on the cats’ necks stand up.
Artemis nodded to her question. Moira’s tricolored hair glinted as she leaned back and the black cat couldn’t help but stare. It was, to say the least, disconcerting.
The lady noticed her gaze and her lips twitched. She twisted a lock of hair around her finger,
“My appearance intrigues you, does it, Flameheart?”
Artemis nodded again.
“You must have guessed by now that I am not a single person as you expected.”
Artemis nodded again.
“It is a very long story of loss and love that I will not bore your flitting attentions with.” Moira sighed, “For your present knowledge, I will say that we, the three Fates, now exist in a single physical body but we have retained our individual spectral forms. Do you understand?”
Artemis nodded again.
“Before we get to your quest, am I right in saying that you found out what my location is from your mother’s old case files?”
Artemis nodded, this time jerkily.
“I suggest you burn them for the good of fate.”
“Your good?” Grint spoke for the first time since they met Moira.
She didn’t reply but addressed Artemis
“However, your knowledge of a certain acquaintance of mine is rather dangerous.”
“Who?” Artemis asked. Moira’s unreadable expression slipped for a second and she breathed out,
“Shade.”
Moira tilted her head,
“But that, I suppose, won’t be a problem. The Principle will take care of it.”
“What?” Grint queried, “Who is that?”
“Someone you shouldn’t need to know about.” Artemis replied, frowning, “But what do you mean about the princip-“
“Time runs out for your world, young Greyblood, I suggest you ask the more pressing questions while you can.”
Artemis was tired of these new names. She had no idea what they meant and they were chicken shit weird. But she ignored this one.
“Where do I find the first piece?”
“The beginning of the trail?” Moira mused, “I suppose you will find it at the place where your story began. The beginning of the end for your deities and the beginning of life for your race.”
“What is that-“ Grint spoke up but was interrupted again,
“You know this piece of knowledge, little Missy Moore.” The lady smiled, as if sharing an inside joke, “and I suggest you hurry if you want to get there before your so called enemies.”
“The BlackClaws?” Artemis nearly snapped at Moira in her alarm, “They know where it is?”
“They do, and so do you.” She replied gravely, “I will send you back now.”
“Wait, can’t you tell us-“
Moira snapped two of her long ringed fingers and Artemis was sucked into a portal.
