"Remember that mustang I had?" I asked.
"Oh god. I remember you tried to use it on your first date and it broke down." Evangeline laughed, "Oh that was horrible. The tow truck guy asked me out while you had to move your own car. Gosh that was so funny."
I rolled over in our bed and looked at her seriously.
"No, no it was not funny. January it was like hell and he was a dick."
"I'm sorry. I'm done laughing now. But why are you asking about the mustang?"
"I miss it. We had fun in that car."
"We almost died in it."
"Did we?" I stared at the wall for a moment trying to recall what she was talking about. Then I remembered the time we were making out in the back seat and I had forgot to put on the E- break and we began rolling backwards causing me to jump in the front seat and hit the breaks hard so we wouldn't crash.
"Oh, yeah. Okay. I remember that now."
"Took ya a second. You don't remember that?"
"I remember what we were doing before that. That stuff was great, ow!"
I rubbed my arm where Evangeline hit it.
"You pervert."
I started laughing, then rolled over and wrapped my arms around Evangeline's small body. She was so tiny in my arms I could wrap them around her twice if I tried hard enough. I looked at her left hand and saw the ring on her finger and began playing with it.
"I put this there." I laughed.
"Yeah, you did." She turned her head and kissed me on the cheek, "and it's gonna stay there."
"Well of course. That's where it belongs. This is where we belong."
We sat in silence for a moment and just listened to the other one breath in and out. I could hear her slow but steady heart beat. It was a nice slow rhythm I could tap my fingers to and write tunes to. I felt her body breath as it began to settle in to bed in my arms. I squeezed tighter, bringing her closer to me and kissed her ear.
"You falling a sleep Jan?" No answer. I sat up and looked over and realized she had fallen asleep in my arms. I laid back down and continued to cradle her in my arms. Pulling the covers over both of us whispered 'Good night' in her ear and laid there next to her still not letting her leave my arms. When I put my head down I didn't close my eyes right away, instead I stayed up holding the one thing that meant more to me than anything and listened to her breath some more.
