"Happy birthday to me....Happy birthday to me....Happy birthday dear Yuri....Happy birthday to me..."

The song rang out on repeat while I sat in front of the cupcake bought from the convenience store.

No candles, no presents. Just me and Vic. Vic was my dog if you didn't know. He had been there since day one but after getting cancer a few years back, I decided to put him down for a long nap. It was for the best anyways. I didn't want the dog to suffer for it's short time left.

Anyways, back to the flashback.

Every birthday after father's leaving was spent alone. Mum just didn't have as much time anymore. She was unable to get a real job and I was of course still too young for one so we were stuck in a bad situation. However, that is when I met Minami.

Since my birthdays were spent not being noticed anyways, I decided to just head to local skating rinks and practice on the down low. One day when going there, I met a bright soul who I never regret bumping into.

We both were skating.... Both having fun on the ice... Then SLAM.

Both of us stumbled back, laughed it off, and thus began a great friendship.

That hard situation really taught me that hope was indeed something to strive for....

"A-A question?!" I stammered out, looking up at the male who had a grin on his face wider than the frame of my glasses.

Speaking of glasses, I felt mine fog up and I quickly wiped at them and kept a cool aura. Let's pretend like he's not standing in front of me with a skin tight ballet suit that hugged that oh so beautiful-

"Skate with me..." He said as if he was asking something small. Viktor, you're so bold...

Wait, skate with him?! How did he know I could skate?! Plus, I wasn't very good at this type of thing anyways. However, I was still curious as to how he found out.

"How do you even know I skate? Or if I'm any good?" I asked nervously.

He smiled and grabbed my thigh.

What the hell?

He then pulled my leg out and up into a split. It was quite easy since I was still so flexible but I was practically about to fall on the floor from him touching me so boldly.

"Flexible....That comes in handy..." Viktor mumbled with a small wink.

What did that mean?!

"Okay, but that is because I'm a ballet instructor. So what!" I shot back.

He just continued to smile.

"Yurio told me. We were sitting around talking and the moment he said you could skate, I shot up, got in my car, and was on my way here. He's probably wondering where the hell I went..."

I smiled at the thought of that. Poor Yurio, all alone now.

"Either way, I am no good-"

"No" Viktor cut me off and held a finger to my lips so I would stop talking.

"Will you or won't you?" He then asked, waiting for my answer.

I moved his finger from my lips and sighed. Viktor, I'll never say it outloud but your are one convincing son of a bitch.

"I will..." I whispered quietly, looking down at the floor.

He grinned and looked to Yuu-chan. "I'm borrowing this one for a little bit. I promise he'll return!"
I couldn't even say anything before he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, carrying me outside and throwing me into his car. Adventure time now I guess?

-

We arrived at a skating rink of all places. I should have guessed due to agreeing to this but I honestly didn't think things would start so soon.

Viktor got out, pulled me out of the car and dragged me into the skating rink. If he was anyone else I'd be blowing a whistle to alert someone for help but... This was Viktor, guys. Come on now.

"Yuri, put on a pair of loaner skates. We will buy new ones at a separate time..." Viktor mumbled and grabbed his bag, unzipping it. Inside he had his own skates, a pair of brown leather ones with black laces and a bright silver blade along the bottom. One sharper than his jawline which is pretty damn sharp I may add.

I sighed and put on my own. It had been awhile since my feet had ever touched skates and the feeling was familiar yet so blurry.

"Shall we go?" He asked me, holding out a hand to me.

Of course I took it and quickly walked over to the ice. In front of me was just...A sea of blank. Not a scratch, not a person. White. Beautiful.

"Viktor, are you sure we have to do this right n-?" Before I could finish, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me out onto the ice, a large grin on his face.

No music was played but he began his own. Humming along to a song nobody knew. He looked at peace with the world and everything in it but suddenly...The male stopped.

"Yuri, what's wrong? Don't you remember how to ice skate?" He asked me, still continuing a small glide around to keep his blood flowing.

"Of course I do," I responded, "I just...Don't know how you skate so freely...."

He raised a brow. "Yuri, how do you skate? Well, why did you used to skate?" He then asked me.

I paused and thought over the question before straightening up to answer.

"I skate with a purpose to look good and do my best. I used to skate to win and pay for my mother's things with prize money but...That never ended up happening..." I explained, "Why do you skate, Viktor?" I then asked, looking up at the male curiously.

Asking a skater why they skate is never because 'it is fun'. Not once have I gotten the answer of that because without purpose, what is the point?"

"I skate for the moment after all my failures, after all my hardships, where I have given my heart and my soul and my sweat and my tears and my everything for a single performance, where I stand on the ice, and bask in the light and the cheers and the people, and where I know, that this is what I'm meant to be doing..." He responded.

From that moment on, I knew Viktor skated with something more. Something secret that I was bound to find out. However, it felt like I needed to find out quickly...Like on this very day, the hourglass had just tipped over and now it was a race to the end. Question was, what would I find?
