Some might call it difficult. An arena of challenge, courage and effort. So hard to make those skates move.
Some might call it flying. Gliding on great silvery, ice cold wings. Rising above the hurt, agony or trials of the everyday.
Some might call it fun. Slipping, sliding, skating your way to your friends. Laughing and joking with new ammunition.
Some might call it art. Spinning and jumping, dancing the way so few can. Feels gasps of awe wash over them.
But Me? What would I call it?
Simple.
Heaven.
Or at least, that is what I used to call it.
The pair of skates my mother once bought me now lay in their box, growing a layer of dust along the leather and the blades have gone dull. Simply memories of a past happiness,
She told me kept going after she left but there was no way. How could I keep doing what I loved after losing the one who introduced me to it.
Simple.
I don't.
My dreams of once being a top skater were shattered like shards of a fancy glass knocked over by a reckless kid in the middle of a tantrum. There was no chance that I'd ever return to that rink or put together routines ever again.
Well, that is...Till I met him.
It all started last December....
-
I rested my fingertip against the glass of the car window, feeling the warmth being absorbed from my skin. The cold air that came from the small crack from it being let down began to paint my usually pale cheeks a rosy red.
"Yuri, you look a bit cold...Do you wish for me to turn the heat on?" A voice said, causing my head to turn towards the driver's seat. This was Minami speaking. Minami was an old friend of mine I got back when I used to skate and even after my career ended, he never seemed to stop adoring me. He was such an odd looking boy. Small, crazy hair, but the sweetest heart anyone could ever had, which is why I kept him around.
"Mm, yes please...Thank you..." I murmured in return as I took the glasses off of my face. I blew on the lenses, causing them to fog up and then used my shirt to wipe it away, leaving them completely transparent.
The glasses went back on my face because I couldn't see of course but even after being cleaned, my world was still dull. It had always been like that. Dull, grey, and monotonous. Like a tv from long ago. Minami told me once to open my eyes after I said this but last time I checked, they were....
Maybe my life was just that boring now.
"How far is this place anyways?" I asked now, causing Minami to give that mischievous smile he always did when keeping something from me. With a slight shrug of his shoulders, we came to a red light and he pulled out his phone and checking the mystery destination I assumed.
"About an hour or so. We have to pick up someone along the way so that may add about ten more minutes." Minami responded, putting his phone away and pressing lightly to the gas when the light flashed green.
I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose with annoyance, knowing exactly who'd we'd be picking up for this little trip. Don't get me wrong, I had nothing against the guy, we were really close friends at times but all the others, it was a bit of a tough love I guess. More or less, he was like the brother that you still considered family despite how many times he picked on you.
Feeling the car pull to a stop once again in the familiar neighborhood, I mentally prepped myself for when-
"Hey, it's the fat pig!" Well. There he is.
I sighed and rolled my eyes, watching as Yurio got into the back of Minami's car with a leopard print bag slung over his shoulder.
"Look, it's the kitten with abnormally long legs..." I grumbled in response which was a bad idea. I could practically feel his face turning red but before he could say a snarky remark to that, Minami plugged in the aux cord into the radion and the music was too distracting for me to hear a word he said.
I hummed along to the song, looking out the window and allowing the pine trees to roll pass along with the occasional car or two.
~
It was only about a half an hour or so of listening to music and watching the winter wonderland before the car came to a stop, the radio now being silenced due to the aux cord being pulled out by Minami.
"We're here!" The cheerful boy said as he unlocked the door.
Yurio was in back ripping on the car door handle so naturally, his car door didn't unlock and I smirked as I got out and left him inside.
"Wait till I get out, pig. I'll butcher you!" Yurio called from inside although it was muffled.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head before going over to Minami. "Where are we?" I asked, nudging his shoulder.
Minami gave the mischievous smirk and opened Yuri's door. "I'll show you in a moment. I'm waiting for someone else..."
Before I could answer, Yurio had jumped on my back and knocked me down into the snow.
"What did I tell you, huh!?" He shouted, hitting his tiny fists into my back although due to my winter coat, I couldn't feel a thing. Plus, he just wasn't all that strong
But then...They stopped all of a sudden and so did his shouts. He even got off of me and went over to Minami.
"Uh, Minami...Who is that?" Yurio asked.
As I lifted my head, I seen an unfamiliar hand out stretched to me. I looked past the hand and at the person who it belonged to.
Average height, silver hair, a smile that somehow made me warm despite how cold it was, and eyes...Like an ocean after a hurricane. If it weren't for the cold already making my cheeks red, my blush would have been fairly noticeable.
"Oh! This is Viktor guys...It is why we are here..." Minami explained.
Viktor...What an odd name. It wasn't the name that was common in this area beings we currently were in Japan. Unlike the name Yuri. I had shared that name with many people and it seemed to be fairly common. Not to mention it was the name for a genre of anime I don't wish to describe.
"Well, are you going to take my hand or lay down there and catch hypothermia?" Viktor asked with an even wider smile. He was Russian...I could tell by the accent and damn was it attractive. His voice was deep and husky yet rolled off of his tongue smoothly.
God, I prayed my gay wasn't showing.
I hesitantly reached up and grabbed his hand, allowing him to help me up out of the snow. Our hands connected along with our gazes and just like that, it was like a world of color.
