Chapter 7

The next day...

Riker POV

"Riker, breakfast is- Wait. Have you been up all night?" Rydel asked.

"Yes..."

"Why?"

"I'm writing a song," I said, putting my pencil down.

"Why?"

"To get Ava as my girlfriend!"

"What?"

"It's a long story. But I need this to be ready by Christmas Eve so I can sing it to her."

"Oh. Do you need help?"

"Yeah, actually... I'm stuck on the verses. I just... I can't write anything good. I have the chorus and everything, but my verses suck. I've tried so many different things, but I can't get something that sounds right."

"Well what are your ideas so far?"

"I have a title. It's called Wishlist."

"Can I hear what you have so far?"

"Sure..."

I played what I had for Rydel.

"I'll think about it... But come on. Breakfast is ready."

"Ok."

Later...

Riker POV

Rydel gave me some ideas for my song. But I was still having a tough time.

I spent all day working on my song.

I just hope it's going to be good enough...

Christmas Eve...

Riker POV

I was hoping my song would be good enough. I mean, I'm pretty satisfied with my chorus. But I'm just nervous about the verses. I hope the whole song is good enough.

I borrowed Ross's guitar, and put it in the back of my car. I drove over to Ava's.

My heart was beating so quickly, and I felt butterflies in my stomach. I nervously walked up to the door with the guitar. I hope I remember the right lyrics and chords...

"Hey! Ready?" Ava asked, answering the door.

"Yeah."

My fingers were shaking a little as I followed her inside.

"Hey, dad. Riker's here," Ava said, leading me into their living room.

"What's he doing here? I thought I told him he couldn't date you."

"I don't know why he's here! He just showed up!"

I walked a little closer.

"Uh... I-I'm here because I wrote a song for Ava."

"Well let's hear it," her dad said, watching my every move.

I knew he was going to judge every single word I sung. If I can't impress him enough with what I was born to do, I don't know what I can do to get his approval...

Well... Here goes nothing...

I started playing. My voice shook slightly at the beginning, but I gained some confidence by looking at Ava's reaction. I finished strong, and stood there silently, waiting to see what her dad would say about it.

"What did you think, dad!? Wasn't it amazing?" Ava asked.

Her father stood up, and walked over to me. My small smile faded, and my heart started pounding in my chest. I was scared he could hear it.

"Riker."

I looked up at him, so scared of what he was going to say.

"I think it was very sweet of you to write that song for my daughter. No boy she's ever brought home has ever done something like that or been so determined to be her boyfriend."

My heart was still racing.

"I really don't like that you haven't gone to college. But I'm willing to give you one chance at being my daughter's boyfriend. One chance. And if you blow it, you're not getting a second one. Do you understand me?"

"Y-yes, sir!"

"Good."

He patted me on the back sort of roughly, and made me stumble forward. He left the room, leaving me and Ava standing there. I was honestly shocked, but so incredibly excited that I got approved!

"We did it!" Ava said, wrapping her arms around me tightly.

I wrapped my arms around her too.

"I can't believe it..." I mumbled.

"It was great, Riker. I loved the song."

"I'm glad you liked it. And I'm even more glad that your dad liked it."

"Me too."

We broke apart.

"So uh... I think I should be getting home now. We're having a Christmas Eve dinner and everything. So um... When should I give you your present?"

"Does the day after Christmas work for you?"

"Yeah, I think so."

"Ok, great. How about you come over that day, and we'll open presents, and just hang out?"

"Ok, that sounds good."

"Bring your guitar."

"Ok. It's actually my brother's."

Ava walked me to the front door.

"I'll see you in 2 days. I'll text you," I said, about to walk out the door.

"Wait!"

Ava grabbed my hand.

"Look," she said, pointing up.

"Mistletoe," I whispered.

She grabbed my tie, and slowly pulled me closer to her until our lips touched.

"You can be her boyfriend, but I don't want to see any of that!"

We broke apart immediately, staring at Ava's dad. My cheeks were burning so badly.

"Uh... See you in 2 days!" I said, running out the door.

"Bye, Riker!"

I quickly put the guitar in my car, and then drove back home.

What a stressful day... But at least I got my Christmas wish...
