My first day of work wasn't anything like the interview, sadly, but was still better than my old job. I swept and mopped the floor to shininess and was even rewarded with free lunch (which I will let you know I was more than appreciative for). My hours were short but that didn't mean the time went by fast, no actually it went by really slow. Not that it was a bad thing either, it seemed no one really bought flowers around this time of year, only when it hit around the time of Valentine's Day did this shop really flourish(literally). Although it wasn't like it was completely dead or quiet since it got a few customers throughout the day and not to mention that the manager whose name I just can't remember wouldn't stop talking. I don't like talkative people that much and found her annoying faster than I find pizza in the fridge(which is very quick with my expertise nose).

"Are you doing anything for the holidays, Bennie?" she asked with a pause. "Can I call you that?"

"I usually spend it with my roommate." I breathed. "Call me what you like."

"So you don't go home for the holidays?"

"My home is with my friend."

"How sweet!" she gushed. "Are you guys like lovers?"

"No." I said. "He has a boyfriend."

"What a shame. Is he going to spend it with you or his lover this year?" She asked and I paused my sweeping to actually realize what she just said to me. I hadn't even considered Michael coming into the picture and just assumed Emery would spent Christmas with me again this year. I'm sure Em would make sure I didn't spend Christmas alone but it still hurt thinking that I could possibly be by myself for Christmas this year.

"I'm not sure."

"Oh." she said awkwardly and I could see how it pained her to get out of the awkward situation she put herself in.

She was saved by an incoming phone call to say anything else so I just continued to sweep like the conversation never happened.

I didn't like to be alone, and Em knew that so I think he'll stay with me again this year. I mean we always have Christmas together, it wasn't going to change now because of a man that has entered his life. At least I hope he would choose me over Michael.

"Bennie you can go now, I can handle everything else."

"Okay." I nodded in a daze, still focused on my plans for the upcoming holidays.

I headed to the back so I could grab my things and go home for today and even if I didn't show it around the manger I was happy as hell. I put on the moose hat, matching scarf and gloves Em bought me for my birthday this year before I pulled on my warm coat because like usual I would be walking home. Not to mention I was going to be bored and lonely without Em tonight due to the presence of Michael messing up our lives. I wasn't mad or jealous or anything; I was just kind of bummed that he and Michael went to a getaway cabin for the night without me. Not that I wanted to go along because who would want to listen to their best friend fucking someone else alone in the next room. But I would have enjoyed the company.

I started my walk home, basking in the dark and my loneliness thinking over all the times I've had Emery by my side. Which was always. Emery was there when I came out to my family, he was there when I got into my first fist fight, he was there when I dated my first crush(whom turned out to be the biggest prick ever), and he was there whenever I got into trouble with anyone - ready to bail me out like he always did. Of course I liked Michael as his lover but I didn't want my friend to leave me for him and forget all about me. I was going to tell myself that that wouldn't happen and Em was going to stick by my side - just like he always had.
