Chapter Three
Alice rolled over and slammed her hand down on her alarm clock forcefully, sighing loudly with annoyance when her hand went straight through the alarm clock and hit the table it was on, with a sharp bang. It'd been a while since she'd woken up and part of her body had transformed, but it still happen from time to time.
She quickly got up and got dressed, making her bed before she left her room. It was 5 o'clock, which meant she had two hours to herself before she had to go and watch Loki again. When she thought about Loki a huge smile lit up her face, quite unexpectedly.
"It's good to see you up and about this early, Agent Lines." Nick Fury said from behind her.
Turning around, Alice smiled politely at her new boss, then walked over to where he was standing. The man seemed to own only one pair of clothes - a long black leather jacket, black undershirt, black pants, and black shoes. Black seem to be his favourite colour! If that didn't give him a creepy look, the eye patch certainly did. Alice had a hard time not staring, but then again she'd always had problems being around people in general.
"Well, you know what they say: the early bird gets the worm." She said, looking at him directly in the eye.
" True, I was hoping to catch you before you did anything today - I have a few follow-up questions that we still need to ask. So, if you'd kindly come with me, please." Fury said, gesturing down the hall.
Alice followed him down the hallway, hurrying past several doors and down another corridor, until they reached the room he was looking for. The door opened automatically and they both walked in, Alice following Fury's shadow. He sat behind a small metal table in the middle of the room.
" Please, sit." He said casually, waving at the chair across from him.
She sat there quietly, waiting pensively for him to start asking the questions. There wasn't much in the room with them, very much like any other room she'd been in - no windows, no carpet, but there were two security cameras in opposite corners on either side of the room. There was also a folder with her name on it lying on the table.
" Alright, let's get started. First question, several days ago we found you in... Orlando, Florida. Can you tell me what you were doing there, at that car tire factory?" Fury said, folding his arms professionally on the table.
" Yes sir, I was at the factory because I was..erm...feeding off the smoke that the factory was giving off." Alice said quickly, a little embarrassed.
" Now, why would you be doing that?" He said, jotting down what she had just said.
"I travel around a lot and not many people are willing to hire a girl who turns into smoke, so when I found out I could feed off of the smoke and the pollutants that were given off by factories, I decided that it would be best for me to just use that as my easiest nutritional source." She watched his eyes widen as she spoke.
"Alright that's enough about that, now just a few personal questions. First of all, how old are you?" He said, turning back to the folder he had laid out on the table. His tone was coated with alacrity; Alice could see that the cheerfulness was fake, or at the very least, forced.
"I turned 26 last Thursday." She said, answering the question politely.
" Well, happy belated birthday, can you now name what it is that you can actually do...y'know, your abilities...?" He struggled to find the right words to phrase that last part tactfully.
"Well, I can turn into steam, smoke, mist and if it's cold enough frost. My smoke can be toxic, my mist can help with fire burns, and my steam form can burn people." Alice said, answering his question with ease; she had been expecting some level of discomfort. She'd had to think back about when she had to use her powers to answer that as wholly as possible.
