Chapter 10: Winter Formal

"Lucas!?" Both girls say, in shock.

He sees Maya and Nathan together and immediately covers for himself, "I'm Riley's date." He shakes Nathan's hand and Nathan relaxes.

Riley looks at Maya and then to Lucas, "Yeah. But if we're gonna all get food let's go now before any other dates arrive." She tells them and grabs Lucas' hand before rushing downstairs with him.

Maya, surprised, follows the pair while Nathan stands there, completely confused by her statement.

The thought of Josiah strikes Maya's mind and she feels a twinge of guilt, even though she's done nothing wrong. But now Riley's date doesn't have a date and doesn't know Lucas stole her.

Nathan, clueless, cheerfully follows Rucas and relaxes because of the fact that Lucas "used" to have a crush on Maya but has now moved on to Riley, the one he's meant to be with.

Nathan wraps an arm around Maya's waist as they approach a small diner.

They sit in booths, and the couples sit next to each other.

Lucas looks over at Riley's screen as she types, "I'm sitting next to this uncultured swine because of you, so answer me now bitch."

He chuckles and Riley glares at him. Maya takes a deep breath, "So uhh... Food?" She tries bringing up.

"If you were on the menu, I'd order you." Nathan flirts, causing Maya to blush.

"I would too." Lucas adds and they all look at him, "For Riley of course. Not Maya." He tries covering and Riley laughs so hard she snorts.

Maya laughs at Riley as the waitress comes over. Riley points to her phone and Maya shoots her a confused look.

Lucas pulls Riley close to him and whispers, "You do realize, she doesn't have a phone, right? And you're actually texting her mother's old phone number?"

"I'll just take a water," Nathan tells the waitress and Maya asks for the same thing. Lucas orders a dr. Pepper and Riley orders a sprite.

"I'm gonna use the restroom!" Riley announces, "'Maya, you wanna come with me?"

"Sure." Maya agrees and follows her quickly.

"I can't stand Lucas. You have to get me away from him." Riley begs once their in the restroom.

Maya gives her an uncomfortable look, "But how?" Riley shrugs, "You're smart, you can figure it out!"

They both exit and Maya lets out an exaggerated groan.

Immediately, Lucas and Nathan ask in unison, "Are you okay?"

Maya only keeps contact with Nathan when she whines, "my stomach really hurts. I was talking to Riley about it and she said she'd take me to pick up some medicine. Is it okay if we meet you at the dance?" She asks.

Nathan nods, "Of course!" He squeezes her hand before she slyly exits with Riley.

"So do you think it's her period?" Lucas asks as soon as the girls are gone.

"There's no doubt in my mind." Nathan replies and both of the guys exchange an amused look.

At the dance, Maya and Riley enter first, Maya is amazed because it's her first highschool dance and it's in a pretty fancy hotel.

"We raised a lot of money during our last fundraiser" Riley tells Maya as they look around in awe.

"It's like a huge ballroom." Maya gasps and Riley smiles, "Yeah but instead of dancing with each other, teenagers are dancing on each other."

Maya rolls her eyes, still astonished by the entire place.

Shortly after the girls, Nathan and Lucas enter. Nathan goes toward the punch bowl to get a drink while Lucas desperately looks for Maya.

He spots her and approaches her quietly, spinning her around to draw her attention.

"Lucas," she greets and then looks around. "Where's Nathan?"

"He's getting a drink." Lucas answers quickly. "Anyways, in about ten minutes, meet me on top of the hotel, okay?"

"On top?" She repeats but he doesn't say anything else because Nathan is coming.

Riley, who allowed Lucas and Maya to have their own space, returns and grabs Lucas' tie. "Come dance with me, my kind of handsome date." She directs as she pulls him onto the dance floor.

Nathan smiles at the other pair before putting his hand out, "Maya, may I have this dance?"

Maya nods and takes his hand as they follow behind Lucas and Riley.

"Oh shoot." Riley whispers as she dances with Lucas. He furrows his brows and she whispers, "Josiah, my date, original one anyways, is here."

"Oh." He chuckles and twirls Riley, she glares at him and he shrugs, "What do you want me to do?"

"Help me, perhaps?" She suggests. "How?" He asks and she grabs Lucas' face and kisses him. Josiah walks passed them cluelessly.

Nathan smirks, "What lovebirds."

Maya follows his gaze and puts a fake smile on her face. "Yeah, they're soulmates for sure."

Lucas pulls away, surprised, "What the hell!?" He asks and Riley grins, "Thanks. You can go now." She informs and walks toward her other date. "Josiah! There you are...!"

Lucas ignores her and fixes his tie as he makes his way to the elevator.

"Um, remember when I said my stomach hurt?" Maya asks and Nathan nods his head slowly.  She nods, "Yeah, it hurts again. I'm going to go to the restroom!" She exclaims and runs off toward the bathroom.

She passes the bathroom instead and opens the elevator. She selects the top floor, and then makes her way up the stairs to the roof.

"How's your intimate night with Riley going?" Maya asks and Lucas flashes a smile at her.

"Somebody sounds jealous." He teases.

"Over you and Riley? Of course not, I'm just curious." She replies calmly before walking away from him and looking at all the buildings surrounding the hotel.

"Curious?" He repeats and gently turns her so she faces him. He lifts her chin, and leans in to kiss her.

Maya leans in too, but only for a moment before turning her head and letting his kiss her cheek. "You little tease." He growls.

She scoffs, "Me? A tease? I never even said I was interested in you."

"Well you're here so I kind of know you're interested." He says and places his hands on her waist .

She pulls his hands off of her, "If all you wanted to do was make out, I'll have to apologize because my date is waiting for me downstairs." She tells Lucas.

He shakes his head with disbelief, "Alright. Have fun." He says and she smiles before making her way back down.
