The bell rang to signal the school day was over and I threw on a sweatshirt and my backpack. I had just made it out of the doors when Peridot ran towards me to walk next to me. "Do you wanna hang out, Lazuli?"

"No, but you won't leave me alone until I say yes." I countered.

Peridot smiled, "Let's go to your house."

We walked in silence. Every once and awhile I glanced down at Peridot. I could tell the silence was killing her. She was distracting herself by typing on her phone; I didn't care enough to see what she was typing though. I would've started a conversation if I wasn't lost in my thoughts. There were so many bad scenarios that could happen with Peridot coming over. First off, my brother and his jerk friends could be there. Second, Peridot could announce that we were in love or something insane like that. Third, my parents were strict about who I hung out with. Peridot spoke quietly, almost like she didn't want to bother me. "I think we just walked past your house."

I spun on my heel. We had walked about three houses too far. "Yeah oops." I apologized lamely.

As we walked, my thoughts shifted from worry to confusion. Why was Peridot acting strangely. I didn't have enough time to come up with any reasons because we had reached my house. I pulled my keys out of my pocket and we walked inside. All the lights were on and my brother was lounging on the couch. His friends weren't over, but my parents were home. My mom was standing at the stove, stirring a pot. Her dark brown hair twirled up in a bun. She had a slim figure, much like myself. My dad was taking out plates for whatever my mom was making. He still wore his teal t-shirt and khakis from work. His fawn, cropped hair had more gray streaks today, his eyes worried. Dad was probably just tired from his day at work because his smile lines were prominent. "Hey kiddo. How was your day?" He hadn't looked up from grabbing plates so he hadn't seen I was with Peridot.

"Pretty good." I lied. "I brought a friend over for dinner."

That caught my family's attention and they turned to look at me. Instead of shying away from the attention, Peridot basked in it. "Hello Lazulis." She grinned. "I am Peridot Diamond."

"Well nice to meet you Peridot," My mom smiled warmly. "Tell me a little about yourself."

Peridot cleared her voice, "Well I'm on the mathlete team, I'm in science club, and I always get top grades out of my entire class." Her grin had turned into a smug smile.

My dad nodded. "Very interesting. You'll have some competition this year." He strolled over and rested his hand on my shoulder. "Right Lapis?"

Before I could say anything, Peridot smirked. "Oh she'll be no problem to beat out."

And that's how Peridot got my entire family to hate her in less than ten minutes.
