-- J.K. RowletThe air was warm and laced with salt from the ocean. Lillie was at the Marina, holding the straps of her backpack determinedly. She was wearing a comfortable traveling outfit, one that she had dubbed her 'Z-Form'.
Lillie had a plan, and one that would take a lot of courage to pursue. The girl wanted to go to Kanto - a region quite far away from Alola. It was where she would go on a journey with Pokémon to become a trainer. But most importantly, it was to find Bill.
Bill was a Pokémon Researcher who possibly held the antidote for Lillie's mother, who was still affected by poison from Nihilego after she had 'fused' with it in the Ultra World.
Lillie was afraid for her mother, and thus wanted to help her. Sure, her mother - Lusamine, head of the Aether Foundation - had gone crazy due to her love for the Ultra Beasts (there was a chance that Lillie's missing father had fueled the insanity as well), thus creating portals to get to the world to be with them. But besides that, Lusamine was still Lillie's mother, and she had good memories with her. Lillie and her mother used to be very close; Lillie recalled sleeping in her mother's bed with her sometimes if she ever got scared as a little girl. Lusamine didn't seem to show much of her crazy side... at least until a little while before Gladion - Lillie's brother - stole one of the lab's Pokémon: a Type: Null. It must've been a triggering point for Lusamine.
And it only seemed to worsen when Lillie ran away with Nebby - another lab Pokémon by the name of Cosmog.
But now, Nebby wasn't hiding away in Lillie's bag anymore. Instead, it was a powerful Solgaleo fighting alongside Sun - a friend of Lillie's who had helped stop her mother, Team Skull (a band of misfits who threatened people and stole Pokémon), and eventually won the Alolan Champion rank. Lillie deeply appreciated Sun's selflessness and dedication to keeping Alola safe; she knew he'd keep his rank for many years to some.
Sun had accomplished so much... and now it was Lillie's turn.
The girl held her backpack straps even more tightly, and - suddenly - a boy's voice caught her attention.
"Lillie!"
The blond girl looked over her should to see a tan boy with dark green hair rushing towards her, a black-haired boy next to him. They were Hau and Sun.
"Hey, Lillie!" Hau exclaimed, stopping and putting his hands on his knees to catch his breath. Sun stopped next to Hau and watched him, still as silent as ever.
Sun talked occasionally - usually to reply to someone or call out attacks during battle. It was hard to tell what was on the boy's mind. But all in all, Sun was easy to talk to and nonjudgmental. Lillie liked that about her friend.
"Y-you didn't tell us you'd be leaving...!" Hau whined once he was breathing regularly again. He looked up at Lillie with pain clear in his gaze. "You're going... w-where?"
"Kanto," replied a tall man in a lab coat, who had just walked up behind Sun and Hau. The boys turned to look at him. Lillie ducked her head towards the man, who was none other than Professor Kukui. "She'll be going there to find Bill."
"I was going to do that, of course," Lillie nodded, catching all of the boys' attention. "But I'm also going to go on my own little journey." She flashed a determined face. "I want to collect Gym Badges and befriend many Pokémon!"
Hau looked surprised at first, and even Sun did, too.
Behind them, Professor Kukui chuckled. "I think that'll be great for you, Lillie," the Professor said, hands in the pockets of his lab coat. "Burnet and I wish you luck." Lillie beamed and smiled, thinking about Professor Kukui's wife, who was so kind and motherly to the girl.
She heard a boat horn blare, then turned to see that her ship arrived. Lillie looked back at Hau, Sun, and Professor Kukui. "Well, I guess I'll be off now," she said, backing away slowly. Hau seemed to get emotional, thus turning away with his head down. "Bye! I-I'll miss you guys! But don't worry -" She winked "- I'll be back!"
Lillie stopped walking when Sun began to move, taking a couple of paces towards her. The girl didn't move when the boy stopped, leaving them face-to-face.
Sun examined Lillie's expression, then grinned sadly and spoke shortly in his calm, rarely-heard voice, "Good luck, Lillie. We'll be cheering for you. And..." He paused. "...I'll be waiting. No matter how long it takes."
Lillie stared at the boy, then smiled bashfully. "I'll be back," she told the boy, "and I'll be a trainer - and a strong one, too. You can count on it."
Sun nodded in belief and held the bill of his hat, watching as Lillie turned around to board her ship. Once the girl was on, Lillie faced the boys again.
Sun was standing in the same position as Professor Kukui and Hau - now next to Sun - waved at her, Hau shouting good-byes. His eyes were glittering, reflecting tears.
Lillie smiled softly and waved at them, and didn't stop till the three on the Marina were about the size of Sitrus Berries.
Lillie turned to face the sea, then felt a jolt of both nervousness and excitement. This was the beginning of her journey - one that would change Lillie... and even save her mother, whom Lillie - despite everything - loved very much.
She was going to become a Pokémon Trainer.
