Nighttime rolled around, and the people in the Pokémon Center began to disappear little-by-little. Lillie was sitting on a couch in the lobby, still waiting for Professor Oak. She was unsure of how he'd get there, but after scanning a paper map that was on the little coffee table in front of her, Lillie realized that there were roads where cars would go, like in Alola. She saw that Pallet Town was a good while away from Vermillion City, and that seemed to relax her. As long as the Professor of Kanto was on his way, then Lillie could calm herself, knowing he was coming.
Soon enough, around eight at night, Lillie heard a car drive up to the sidewalk in front of the Pokémon Center, along with a pair of headlights. Is that him? Lillie asked herself as she got up and slowly approached the front doors. They slid open automatically when Lillie got close enough, and she peered outside to see a jeep-like vehicle with a cover.
An older man with graying hair stepped out from the driver's seat, followed by a small brown-furred Pokémon hopping out and onto his shoulder. Lillie narrowed her eyes and realized that the little Pokémon was an Eevee. The older man was wearing a white lab coat over a red shirt, so Lillie guessed he would be...
"Oh, hello there," the man greeted, the Eevee on his shoulder yipping. "Are you Lillie?"
"Mhm," Lillie nodded in reply. "Y-you must be..."
"Professor Oak," the man nodded. "You're coming to start your journey here, aren't you? How old are you?"
"E-eleven," Lillie responded, clenching the straps of her backpack. "I'm - er - eleven."
"Well, that's alright, then," Professor Oak grinned. "Usually, here in Kanto you need to be just ten to get your starter. But I suppose Alola does have different standards. Come, let's get going."
His Eevee looked at Lillie with curious, wide brown eyes as the Professor headed for the driver door of the car. Lillie shyly went into the passenger's seat. Once they both buckled up, the car was off and onto the road to Pallet Town.
"Your Professor told me about you," Professor Oak started. Lillie looked up suddenly, feeling a sense of fear. "U-uh, h-he did...?"
The Professor nodded. "You seem tense," he said, then smiled. "Don't worry. He didn't tell me everything. Just a bit about how you were his assistant for a short while."
"Oh..." Lillie said slowly, internally exhaling with relief.
Professor Oak's Eevee was on the middle council and was looking at the girl with the same curious gaze shown before.
The Professor noticed this and commented, "It seems that Eevee is taking a liking to you."
"Y-ya think so?" Lillie asked, slowly stretching her hand out to the fuzzy brown creature. Eevee sniffed her hand, then kindly licked it and wagged its bushy tail.
"Eevee!" it cheered.
"I do," Professor Oak grinned as Eevee crawled onto the girl's lap and nuzzled her. "Eevee is very perky and easy to befriend. She likes almost everybody she meets."
Lillie felt her heart melt at the sight of the small, lovable Pokémon. "Aw, I like her, too," she said, petting the Eevee's pelt.
The Normal-type's tail wagged as it yipped. "Vee!"
The car ride went for a while longer, and Eevee was now curled up on Lillie's lap, sound asleep. Its side rose and fell slowly in a pattern, and its breathing was gentle.
Lillie stroked its mane when Professor Oak spoke. "So, Lillie, I've heard that some things went down in Alola."
Lillie paused abruptly and looked up at the older man. "Yeah...?"
