I blinked and everything was blurry. I turned my head and I could tell I was moving.
People were standing over me and talking to each other.
I closed my eyes just as someone was saying something. The pain I was feeling was horrible but it was fading.
In fact, everything was turning and twisting. It was like a bad trip.
I tried to lift my hands but they were strapped down.
Something pressed down on my stomach and my eyes flew open.
I screamed and yanked my arms but hands held me down and everything was getting sharper.
A man stared down at me. "Can you hear me?"
I nodded and calmed down but I started crying because the pain was coming back.
"What's your name?" he pinched my arm and slipped an IV tube in.
"Alex." I whispered.
"Can you tell me what happened?" he reached over me and grabbed something. He hooked up an IV bag and hung it up.
"Two guys stabbed me." I closed my eyes.
"Come on, Alex, you have to open your eyes."
I did and he looked down at me. "Is my baby going to survive?"
"Your baby?"
I nodded and I felt the pains in my stomach. "My stomach hurts." I started crying. "Is the baby going to live?"
He grabbed my hand. "I'm not going to lie to you Alex, but I really can't tell at this point."
I looked away and cried.
"Are you married?" he asked. I felt the ambulance turn.
"My husband and I got into a fight." I looked back at him.
"Did he do this to you?"
I shook my head. "No. I don't know who they were."
He grabbed a clipboard. "What's your last name Alex?"
"Anderson." I said and then screamed out in pain.
"Hold on, Alex. We're almost there." he squeezed my hand for reassurance.
I closed my eyes and thought about Drew.
I didn't know if I was going to see him again. I didn't know if my baby was going to live.
I opened my eyes and I was in a hallway. A group of doctors and nurses surrounded me on the gurney.
They put a mask over me and a few seconds later I was asleep.
***********************
It was quiet.
I opened my eyes slowly and the room was barely lit.
Someone stirred beside the bed. They touched my hand and I wrapped my hand around their fingers.
"Alex?" my mom whispered.
Tears started pouring down my face. I turned my head and faced her.
"Alex." she leaned over and put her arms around me carefully.
"Is the baby okay?" I pushed her away gently.
"Oh, honey." she kissed my forehead. "You are so lucky." she sat back in the chair. "The baby is alive and healthy." she patted my stomach carefully.
I was wrapped in bandages and I was in horrible pain.
"What time is it?" I leaned back and yawned.
"Around 9:00PM." she said glancing at her watch. "Drew came by."
I nodded. "What did he say?" I asked quietly.
"I didn't get to talk to him. He got here when you were in surgery and he was angry." she shook her head. "Beth told him what happened and he just left."
I closed my eyes. "Oh." I didn't want to think about what happened. I'm just glad my baby is okay. "Will you turn off the light?"
I heard her get up and a few seconds alter the light went out.
*******1 week later********
I sat up and put my hands over my stomach.
Someone knocked on the door and it opened. Drew was in the door.
I looked at him and then down at my lap.
"Can I come in?" he asked quietly.
I nodded and he sat in the chair by the bed. I didn't want to cry but I did anyway. Just the sight of Drew is making me cry.
He sat by me on the bed and I looked at him.
"Drew, I'm sorry." I whispered. "Please don't hate me." I put my face in his shoulder and cried.
"Shh, Alex, I don't hate you." he kissed my forehead.
He rubbed his thumb on my cheek.
"Who did this?" he whispered. He touched my stomach. My bandaged stomach. "I almost lost you. We almost lost the baby. Do you know how bad it would be if I ever lost either of you?"
I put my hand around his neck and kissed him eagerly.
He was surprised at first but kissed me back. He tangled his fingers in my hair and smiled.
I pulled away and put my hands on his cheeks. "I love you."
He smiled. "Are you saying that because of the baby?"
"I'm saying it because I mean it." I put my hands around his. "I'm sorry about leaving."
He squeezed my hands. "I understand why you did it. You don't have to apologize." he looked out the window and then back at me. "I think it's time I told you about me."
I looked at him curiously. I tried to sit up but I couldn't.
Drew smiled and picked up the remote to the bed. He inclined the back and I sighed happily.
"Thanks." I said.
He smiled and closed the door to the room. He sat in front of me and looked like he was thinking.
After a few minutes I sighed.
"Just tell me." I said and halfheartedly smiled.
He took a deep breath. "I'm thinking about your reaction."
"Drew, come on, tell me. It's not like you're a mafia or something." I joked.
He looked away.
Oh. I put my hand over my mouth.
"You are?" I whispered.
He looked back a me. "Yeah. But you cant tell anyone." he raised an eyebrow. "Promise."
I nodded. "I promise."
He smiled softly. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you ,but I had to make sure it was okay first. That's why I was going to leave that day, I was coming back the next day." he put his hand on my leg and messaged my knee.
"You didn't tell me you were coming back the next day." I turned pink. "I feel so stupid."
He shook his head. "It's okay." he laughed. "Are you coming home, now that you know?"
I looked away just to mess with him and pretended to think about it. When I looked back at him I smiled.
"Is that a yes?" he leaned closer.
I nodded. "That's a yes." I put my hand over his mouth. "But we have some things to discuss first."
He nodded. "Anything."
