Loud pounding on their apartment door is what drove both Hinata and Naruto to awaken from their peaceful sleep. Both curious as to who could be knocking at their door at four in the morning, both of them made their way to the door, opening it to see a familiar woman their age with disgustingly dark purple and red bruises marring her otherwise pale skin.
Unable to believe her eyes, Hinata’s eyes teared up at the sight of her long lost childhood friend looking so broken, “y-y/n?”
Not completely sure of what to say, y/n simply nodded as fresh tears streamed down her face as the violet eyed female pulled her into a comforting hug. It had been so long since she had felt such a genuine act of kindness, all y/n could manage to do was break out into a fit of violent sobs as she clung to her friend as if her life depended on it. The second pair of arms to wrap around her made her feel like she had been given a shield that she didn’t deserve as Naruto cradled both crying females with a dark look in his sky blue eyes.
The brutality of the bruises on the h/c haired girl that he had known all his life made him feel sick to his stomach just by the sight of them. He had a pretty good idea of what may have happened to his once strong friend, but not knowing who or why someone could harm someone like her brought out a rare anger in him that he hadn’t felt in a long time.
It seemed as if hours had passed since y/n’s arrival on their doorstep, and the three of them were now seated at the kitchen table with cups of hot tea to try and sooth the emotional pain that y/n was going through. Neither Hinata or Naruto had the nerve to bring up the reason why y/n had even left Konoha in the first place, nor did they want to pry about what happened to her since then. Both felt the same amount of worry as they noticed the dead look in her darkly rimmed tired eyes.
“It’s okay to ask…”
Hinata bit her lip as Naruto sighed uncomfortably, “what happened? It’s totally okay if you don’t want to talk about it… I-it’s just..”
Smiling faintly at their concern for her feelings, y/n looked at naruto, impressed with how much he had matured over the last four years, “it’s okay. I’ll have to say something at some point right?”
When Naruto didn’t answer, Hinata rested her hand over her friend’s with a sad smile, “only if you feel that you need to.”
Grateful for their consideration, y/n told them everything, watching their eyes darken as her life with Jason grew into one dark living nightmare. The memory of every punch, every insult, and every forced act of intimacy brought a new wave of shame over y/n. She could see the pity and the anger in both of their eyes as they absorbed every gruesome detail until Naruto slammed his hand down on the table at the end of her story, “that bastard! I swear, y/n, if he ever comes near you again…”
With a weak smile, y/n looked directly into his eyes, knowing that whatever happens, Naruto would always be the most loyal and protective of his friends. Having always been that way, y/n knew that she had made the right choice in coming home. She didn’t expect him to lay down his life for her, but to know that she had someone there on her side gave her a sense of peace that she hadn’t felt in a very long time. It was also the reason she was happy to see that he and Hinata had finally gotten together.
Smiling softly, Hinata took y/n’s hand in her own, “you’re welcome to stay as long as you need to. We have a spare room that you can use for however long you need.”
Grateful for the gesture, y/n thanked them before letting them return to bed. Having not slept in days, y/n dropped her bag on the floor before crawling onto the soft mattress. For the first time in years, y/n fell into a deep sleep feeling safe.
