I watched Mark walk towards school. Tyler, Bob, and Wade joined him halfway, then Amy and Ethan. I could hear their voices from here.
There was a knock at my window. I turned and saw it was Tyler's brother, Jared. I rolled down the window for him.
"Hey man! You too?" He laughed sadly.
"Yeah..." I looked back at Mark and his friends. "It's weird, y'know? I've taken him to school on the first day since he was in Kindergarten, and it's crazy how you see things change. Him and Tyler walking in together since 4th grade, Bob and Wade walking with them in 8th, Amy since 9th, and now Ethan at the start of 11th..."
"It's been wild, bro. Just think, next year's their last too..." He sighed. "You headed to the campus?"
I smirked. "Get in hitchhiker." I told him nodding to the passenger seat.
"Thanks!"
He and I had our first class together at the local college across town. Might as well drive him.
"So...predictions for this year?" I asked, as was tradition.
"Well, I do hope Tyler finds someone this year." Jared confessed. "I mean-he's gotta go to Junior Prom with somebody other than a friend, right?"
"Right-right-but! Tell you what-I'll bet he's already found someone, just hasn't realized it yet!" I raised him. "I have a feeling something scary is gonna happen in, like, the middle of the year of something."
"Oh not this again!"
"It's a small thing!"
"It's a negative thing!"
"I was right last time though!"
"What, back in 7th grade?"
"Yes-Joey broke his nose!"
"That doesn't count! He breaks his nose every year!"
"You know what-nevermind!" I settled loudly. Quarreling was another thing we did every year....as was tradition. "All in all-this is going to be another good year for everyone, even with the bumps-"
"Okay!"
"All I said was bumps!"
"Last time you said bumps they ended up being: Tyler falling off the roof-"
"He wasn't on the roof to begin with!"
"Mark demolishing his trumpet while it was still in the case-"
"What was he supposed to do, run into oncoming traffic?"
"Ethan broke his ankle-"
"That was because of his coach's bad spotting!"
"But it all still happened!"
"Well I'm sorry for being correct!"
We were quiet for a couple minutes.
"That's all gonna happen now, isn't it?" He assumed, not wanting the answer.
"I am so sorry, dude..." I sighed.
Silence.
"Subway for lunch?"
"I don't see why not, bro!"
