"Would anyone wish to object to the binding of this marriage? Speak now or forever hold your peace."

Silence settles over the field, the guests poised for disruption.

Sweet harmonies drift through the trees surrounding us, insects buzzing through the summer air. Tension hums between the bride and groom until a chair squeaks and a petite girl rises to her feet.

The sun catches her skin, sweat glistening along her hairline. Her hands tremble at her sides as every head turns toward her.

Nostrils flare. Lips quiver. Her breathing grows louder than the forest itself. She swallows hard and shifts her weight, aware of every stare digging into her skin.

Anyone would hate her for this.

She would forever be known as the girl who interrupted a wedding for her own selfishness.

"Me?" Her voice is thin, unsteady. "I object. That's what you're supposed to say at one of these, right?"

A ripple of whispers spreads through the crowd. She lets them pile on, as if her own thoughts aren't already drowning her.

She wonders how much of an asshole she'll look like if this fails.

All she wants is to walk away from this altar with the bride's soon-to-be husband—the man who spent every cent of his paycheck on this wedding.

That isn't too much to ask. Right?

"When I met you, everything just... fit," she says, her voice gaining the slightest steadiness. "You were a couple years older. Everyone knew it. We spent day and night together, falling in love over and over again."

She tucks a loose curl behind her ear.

"You took all of me. The baggage. The mess. You loved me anyway. We fought through disagreements and doubt. We survived it."

Her eyes lift from the ground to the groom.

Trevor.

He's already looking at her.

The bride is crying now. Makeup streaking down her cheeks. Yet somehow the attention still lingers on the girl standing in defiance.

She fought herself the entire drive here. Promised this would be the last time she let herself feel this way. Promised she could watch him marry someone else and survive it.

But seeing him now—seconds from being handed over to someone she knows he cannot love the way he once loved her—shatters every rehearsal she practiced.

"If you marry her today, you'll regret it," she says, tears slipping freely now. "You won't be as happy as we were, and you know that."

She turns briefly toward the bride.

"I'm sorry. I truly am. But I couldn't let this be my last chance without saying what my gut has been screaming at me for months. It's a horrible thing—longing for something you can't replace. I thought it was me. I kept telling myself it had to be me."

Her gaze returns to Trevor.

"It isn't. It's you. I love you, Trevor Thornton. And I don't know how not to."

The bride sobs openly now.

The guests stare in stunned silence.

"I don't know what I expect from this," she says softly. "Closure, maybe. I just hope you're certain. Absolutely certain you're in love with her. Maybe I waited too long. Maybe your feelings for me disappeared while mine only grew stronger."

She exhales shakily.

"But I couldn't walk away today without telling you I love you. And that I'm sorry for how we ended."

A weak smile flickers across her face.

"That's all."

She steps away from the chair placed in the aisle just for her.

When she reaches her car, she collapses into the driver's seat and grips the steering wheel.

Then she pounds her fist against it, tears breaking free.

"Stupid. Stupid. Stupid."
