I let out a sharp breath and Harry’s hand tightened on mine. “Right, well. It was nice seeing you. Goodbye.”
He turned away, but hadn’t taken a step when Leila spoke again. “No! Wait!”
Harry sighed and closed his eyes. “Please don’t do this.”
“I’m not doing anything… I just want to speak.”
I looked at her. She looked desperate. “Please, I haven’t seen you in a while.”
Harry turned to face her. “Well whose fault is that?”
She ignored him, fixing her gaze on me. “Is this…?”
“This is my girlfriend, Brenna.” Harry said. “I brought her here to meet the family.”
I offered her a half smile, wanting nothing more than to leave. Her green eyes flashed and I recognised the hurt it them. “Brenna. Your girlfriend. Family?”
“Yes. Is there a problem?” Harry asked, his gaze cold.
“You erm…” her voice dropped to a whisper. “Moved on quick.”
“It’s been two years.”
“I remember when I met your family…”
Was she really doing this? “I remember when you cheated on me with that scum bag,” Harry countered.
“Oh God. That was a huge mistake, Harry.”
“Yeah, well. It’s cool. I’ve come to realise that I didn’t really love you.”
She gasped. I widened my eyes. Did he mean what he was saying? He didn’t meet my eyes.“W-what?”
“What I felt for you… It wasn’t love.”
“How would you know?” She whispered. “I loved you, Harry.”
“Yeah, well, you picked the wrong person to love.”
“Please don’t do this--”
“We’re going. I promised mum I’d be home soon.”
“Please don’t do this!” She cried.
“I’m not doing anything. It was nice meeting you. Goodbye, Leila.”
“No. Stop. I… I miss you,” her voice cracked and her eyes glistened with tears. I froze. Was she being serious?
I glanced at Harry who seemed to sense my discomfort. “Should have thought of that before you cheated on me with him. Come on, Brenna.”
“I didn’t mean to!” She cried, tears streaming down her face and smudging her mascara. I almost felt bad for her. She was a nice girl, but she was heartbroken. It was her own fault, though, so I couldn’t really dwell on that.
“Harry?” Another voice asked, and I turned my head to find a girl standing behind Harry. Another one? I frowned, looking at her. She had long brown hair and was quite tall, almost the same height as Harry.
Harry sighed in relief. “Gemma.”
Gemma. This was Harry’s sister? She smiled at him and I saw the resemblance in their smiles. She took one look at me, then at Leila, and her eyes flashed in understanding. Her eyes hardened and she stepped beside Harry.
“Leila, what the fuck are you doing?” She snapped.
Leila sniffed. “Hello, Gemma.”
“Answer my question.” Gemma snapped.
“I… I saw Harry and I realise now how much I miss him. I made a mistake.”
“You’re a bit too late for that, don’t you think? He has a girlfriend.”
