I walked to my locker which, thank god, was next to all of my friends. The hallway was lined with lockers which pushed into the hallway creating less space for the students. Our school has only three floors: the top floor, the main floor and the basement. Each floor held a specific set of classes. Up top was the English classes and two arts classes. The main floor contained our math rooms and the lunch/assembly room. We would also perform plays and dances here. The basement was home to our science rooms which happened to be one of my favorite subjects.

I put away my backpack and grabbed my binder. Jackson and I had the same first period and walked together. "Yippee" I said. "We're back to this hellhole." I mentally slumped. We reached the science room and saw none of our friends. The teacher had drawn out our assigned seats on the board so Jackson and I walked in and sat down. I was happy because next to my name the teacher had written Zera S. who was one of my crazier friends. Zera and I shared a deep love of anime and we loved to share our thoughts and ideas on them. The bell rang and our teacher took role. After that he went on to talk about what to expect in the coming year and we learned about each other. My next two periods we similar. Our typical first day consisted of the teachers reminding us who's schedule we're following and who the boss is.

I ate lunch at about 11:45 and I realized that I had no one to sit with excluding Jackson. (Cue sad music) We sat alone at a table and began to eat sadly. We were so used to eating with our friends that we didn't know what it felt like to have none. Last year we had had a lot of fun stealing each other's food and telling embarrassing stories about one another. After about ten minutes I recognized someone that was coming out of the microwave room. He comes over laughing with one of his friends named Jared. Jared was Sam's ex and in my opinion he was a jerk. He was lanky and pale with spiky brown hair which made him look like a hedgehog. He usually wore an orange vest and some jeans. Jared sees my look and continues to walk outside but the boy stays at the table with us. He has tan skin and short black hair which he would style up in a mohawk. He has dark brown eyes and a teasing smirk you hate but like at the same time. "Why are you guys alone?" He asks. Oh god I don't want Oliver's pity.
"We just don't have any friends in this lunch." I reply. He puts on a hurt face and traces a tear stream going down his face.
"I thought we were friends Avery." I roll my eyes and smile. He sits down next to me and opens his lunch box.
"What are you doing" I say clearly annoyed.
"I'm going to eat with you guys. Duh."
"What about your friends?"
"They'll be fine."
I look to Jackson for help but she's just happy not to be alone anymore so I laugh and resume eating. The bell rings and we walk to English. My teacher assigns me to sit with Zera (Yes!) and Oliver (Yes?). I look at Zera and we share an eye conversation,
"That was a terrible decision."
"I know, we are going to chat up a storm"
"What about Oliver?"
"Ah screw him"
Zera and Oliver have never been friends. Zera hates him and whenever I ask her why she just shrugs and laughs it off. I silently laugh as the class settles down. Today we are just getting to know the teacher and what to expect. My teacher is new this year and told us about her dream to be a middle school teacher. This means that's there is no homework tonight. At least that's what I thought.

After English I have math with Mrs. S. There was no "let's get to know me games" in here. The bell rang and Mrs. S was in full attack mode. She assigned us homework ON THE FIRST DAY. Who does that? I face planted onto the table and sighed. At least it was the end of the day. After what seemed like an eternity the final bell rang and we were excused. I saw a familiar blonde in the hallway and shouted, "HARRISON!" She turned and saw me. Her face lit up as I made my way upstream toward her. Harrison had beautiful straight blonde hair and blue eyes. She was wearing tights, converse, and her usual pink sweatshirt. We hugged and I asked where Addison was so we could catch the bus. She directed me to Addison's locker and said goodbye. Addison had light brown hair that she would normally curl. She wore dark blue jeans, converse, and a gray sweatshirt.

After we gathered our things we waited for Jackson and Max outside of the school. When they finally reached us we walked to the bus stop. We took the 9 bus to Great Harvest and got some soda. Jackson and I saw some friends and chatted with them for a little bit. After that we caught the 209 and talked about our first day at school. We joked around until Jackson and I got off and walked the block home. Our parents worked all day so we only saw them at dinner. Sometimes at breakfast if we were running late. Jackson and I had the house to ourselves but there was a phone limit. After 6:00 no more phones and we would have to get our homework done before our parents got home around 7:00.

I was on my last math problem when I heard the key turning. I finished the problem and ran downstairs. The door opened. "Hi Dad, how was your day?" He put his stuff down and took off his coat. Dad went across the room and snagged an orange.
"It was really good thanks," he peeled the orange. "how was yours Avery? Want half?" I grabbed the orange and just shook my head.
"It wasn't great but it was just the first day right? It can only get better from here!" I was very optimistic and boy was I wrong.
