Prologue

*2011*

"I love you, Anna. I'm so in love with you that it hurts. And it's ok if you can't say it back yet. Just be mine. Please," Luke said to the girl.

"Luke, I-I can't. My acting career is just taking off. I'm set to be the next big thing and you, well, you're you," Anna explained.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"You're a nobody, Luke. You're a scrawny 16 year old in a wanna be band. I'm an 18 year old rising star and you're a loser. We're part of two different worlds. Do you understand now?" She said harshly.

Luke didn't know why she was being this way. He thought that something had grown between them this summer while they hung out during her breaks from filming, but now that she was leaving Sydney to go home in LA, he realized that he was wrong. She never had feelings for him, he was just a hookup the entire time. Luke's heart was shattered, this was his first time falling in love and it had all been fake. He had never felt so stupid and naive in his life.

Anna's heart broke watching Luke's reaction, but she had to do this. Her publicists told her that Luke was bad for her image, and image was everything in show business. She hated hurting him like this, but it was better for her career, and better for him too. If they weren't associated, Luke could move on with his life and get into a relationship that wasn't challenged by distance. Anna knew her reasoning was bull, but she kept repeating it to herself so that maybe, one day, she would believe it the way he clearly did.

As Anna turned to leave, she felt Luke grab her wrist and say, "Anna please. Don't do this to me. Please." He sounded so broken she couldn't bear to look at him.

"Goodbye, Luke," she said as stern as she could, using her years of acting experience to hide her emotions.

As she walked out the door and to the car waiting for her outside, she could've sworn she heard him say, "I'll always love you, Anna. And one day we will be together for real. I promise." But she couldn't be sure that's what he said, as she was too busy hurrying to the car and holding back tears.

As she left, both teens broke down into tears, realizing that they'd just said goodbye, quite possibly for the last time.
