I finally catch Cedric walking out of Potions. "Cedric?" I ask, nervous.
He turns around. I play with my Hufflepuff scarf nervously. "Oh, hello, Y/n," he says, grinning.
"So..... I was wondering..... if.... if you wanted to go to the ball with me?"
His smile faded. "Oh... sorry, Y/n, but I already asked someone else," he replies, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Sorry." He says again.
I try to fake a smile. "No, no, it's okay- I mean- you had already asked someone else. It's okay." I ramble on like an idiot. "Well, see you around," I say, waving, turning, then running towards the Hufflepuff common room trying to hold back tears.
Well, it was like he was going to ask you, Y/n. You don't even know him that well.
Flopping down on one of the comfy armchairs in front of the fire, I allow a single tear to roll down my cheek.
Moments later, my best friend, Ernie Macmillan comes down the stairs. He spots me. "Y/n?" He asks, looking worried. "Are you okay?"
I sniffle a little. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"No you're not," he says, taking my hand. "Tell me what's wrong."
"C- Cedric didn't ask me to the ball," I sniffle, stuttering.
"Cedric? The guy in your year?"
"Yeah."
"The one you really, really like?"
"Yes."
"Hmm." He thinks for a second. "He really likes you, you know that, right?"
"He does?"
"Yeah, he told me when you were in the hospital wing after your Quidditch accident. He really cares about you." He pauses. "What if we make him jealous?"
"We?"
"Yeah! You take me to the ball and we pretend to be in love or something. He gets jealous, and then you two finally admit your feelings for each other!"
"Ernie, are you sure you're not in Slytherin?"
"Maybe," he says, winking at me, making me laugh.
Just then, Cedric walks in and sees me laughing next to Ernie. "Now!" I whisper.
"So, Y/n, will you do me the honor of being my date for the Yule Ball?" He asks, taking my hand and kissing the back of it.
I pretend to be absorbed in his words. "It would be my pleasure."
In my peripheral vision, I see Cedric clench his jaw slightly and narrow his eyes. He storms upstairs, the angriest I've ever seen him.
I give Ernie a high-five. "What if I wear his favorite color?"
"Red? That'll grab his attention, for sure."
"Yep," I say, popping the p. "Well, see you later," I say as I climb up the stairs to the girl's dorms.

It was finally the day of the Yule Ball. I look at the gown that is draped on my bed, a crimson dress that's pretty modest, except for the knee-high slit and the neckline that shows a bit of my chest. I went dress shopping in Hogsmeade with Hannah Abbott, a friend of mine in the same year as Ernie.
An hour and a half before the Yule Ball, I sit in front of the mirror and begin to work on my hair. I use my wand to make soft waves in my hair, wearing it down on my shoulders and placing a charm on it so it'll stay like that for the rest of the evening, then I begin to work on my makeup. I decide to go for a slight smoky eye, using nude colors. I put on some red lipstain and then throw on a ruby necklace and matching earrings.
I put on my shoes and hear a voice calling my name. "Y/n!" It was Ernie.
I went through the door and slowly began to descend the stairs, my gown swishing slightly behind me.
As soon as I reach the last step, I spot Cedric on his way out of the common room, then he stops and looks at me, his jaw agape. I focus my attention on Ernie as he says, "Evening, Y/n. You look stunning." I pretend to blush, and he continues. "Shall we?" He extends an arm. I gladly take it and he leads me past a slack-jawed Cedric and through the exit.
I giggle as we walk down the main hall. "Nice move," I say, elbowing him in the side.
"Thanks," he says, grinning. "I have been known for my-" he takes out a pocket comb and runs it through his hair- "smoothness."
All I can do is laugh.
We enter the Great Hall to see a winter wonderland. It takes my breath away as I look around in awe.
During the champion's dance, I notice that Cedric's eyes are glued to me and his date is trying to get his attention. Once everyone is allowed to dance, Ernie leads me to the dance floor and we waltz around, him lifting me off the ground randomly.
After Ernie and I dance until our feet hurt, we sit at a table not too far off from the one Cedric's sitting at. I continue to talk to Ernie about nothing and am cut off when someone clears their throat.
We both turn and Cedric stands there, trying to hide his anger. "Do you mind if I borrow Y/n for a minute?"
"Not at all," he says, and takes my hand and kisses it as I stand up. Cedric takes my hand in his and leads me out the doors quickly. We stop in front of a portrait of a man sleeping, his back against a maple tree.
As heels go of my hand, he asks, "What was that?!" He exclaims, the jealousy on his face rather evident.
"What was what?" I ask innocently.
"I know you two were trying to make me jealous. Why?"
"Because-" I stop and look at him straight in his stunning grey eyes. "Because I really like you, but when you told me you had already asked someone else my heart broke, and when Ernie suggested that we make you jealous- and, well, I couldn't say no."
He just stares at me.
I sigh. "But I guess now it just wasn't worth doing, because you-"
My words are stopped abruptly when he softly touches his lips to mine, placing his hands on my lower back. I gladly return the kiss, looping my arms around his neck.
"Oi! Go snog somewhere else, will ya?" The man in the portrait has woken up and glared at us, crossing his arms.
"Fine," Cedric says, looking around for somewhere private. He takes my hand and pulls me into the nearest broom closet, and let's just say we never returned to our dates.
