Chapter one

Emma's pov

My name is Emma Kate Swan, but I don't really like my first name so I just prefer to be called Em. I could never figure out why I hate my name. I guess it just kinda annoys me.

I live with my mother in Arizona. I am actually kind of a loner. It's not like I’m bullied or anything. It's just that people tend to leave me alone or they don't realize I'm even in the same room as them. I don't blame them though because I don't really make an effort to try and make friends because...Well...I'm mute.

You see I've been mute ever since I was about seven years old. There is a reason behind me not talking. A reason my brother has been trying to figure out since I stopped.

There is a reason for me not talking and it's mostly fear, fear of what my mother would do to me if I ever told anybody the truth, fear that people would really hate me if they find out I knew what she did to my stepfather, Bill Mata.

My mother did a great job of trying to be clueless about why I am a mute she even got me a therapist. He goes by Mr. Mark but he lets me call him by his first name Which is Albert, Al for short.

I actually really like him. He's in his late thirties and he's kind of like my friend. So I guess you can say I do have a friend after all. I've been going to him ever since I was eight. He does all the talking and even got me into writing. I write my feelings, what happens in school, and about my family.

My brother Cameron and I are super close. He is two years older than I am. I'm 17 while he just turned 19. He is like my best friend and he understands me so much.

My mother is Renee Swan. My mom is a nurse. It's Wednesday 12:46 pm. I am sitting in English right now, listening to the lecture on Romeo and Juliet. I read this book on my own about 3 times and now have to read it again in class.

I sit in the far back of the classroom, just staring out the window. I like school, I know a lot of people hate it but not me. I've always liked learning new things. Except right now cause I know everything there is to know about Romeo and Juliet.

I was staring out the window looking at the senior parking lot when there was a knock on the door interrupting Mrs. Austin's teaching.

I looked away from the window to see two officers walking into the classroom. I quickly recognized them as Larry Fisher and Josh Reardon. They used to always come to the house to watch the football games on Sunday nights.

Larry whispered something into Mrs. Austin's ear and her face fell flat with shock and turned to the class... wait, she turned to me. "Miss. Swan," she said, gesturing for me to come over to her.

Everyone was staring at me as I picked my stuff up from my desk and made my way to the front of the room. When I got to them I could see my brother standing in the hallway.

I walked outside into the hallway and sent my brother a concerned and confused look. He just shrugged his shoulders.

He and I just stood there as Larry and Josh came out of the classroom and looked at us with sympathy and sadness. I started to panic, they were really starting to scare me.

Did they find out what she did? Oh my god, they’re here to question me. "What's going on? What happened?" Cam asked, getting impatient and I could tell that they were trying really hard not to cry.

"Umm...Em, Cam, I don't exactly know how to tell you this but your mother got into a terrible accident and well -I'm so sorry but...but she didn't make it."

Cam kept denying it while trying to hold back his tears. I let out a very low cry and I fell to the ground, but it was not out of sadness.

No, it was out of joy, and to you, that may seem sick, but to me, her death is relieving there is no more worrying about her and no more hurtful words when Cameron isn't around
