"Kate?" Kevin couldn't hold back his surprise, seeing his former girlfriend standing before him. Kate walked up to him and they shared a hug before Kevin was pulling away.
Kate glanced around, her brow raised curiously. "You're not with Y/N? I don't see her around."
"She's at the bookstore right now," Kevin answered before motioning towards Kate. "W-What are you doing here?"
"Oh, I'm here to pick something up for JJ's car," she answered, smiling at the salesman that had approached her. She gave him her name and he smiled, excusing himself to fetch whatever JJ had purchased and Kate was picking up for him.
Kevin could only nod, smiling as Kate stood there, admiring him. He found himself at a loss for words. Dot always did that to him. In that moment, Kevin wished you could have been next to him. You would have eagerly knocked him out of his daze and dragged him out of the shop.
"Kevin, um, would you like to grab some lunch?" asked Kate, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear shyly, her smile almost sheepish. "It's been a while and just—"
Kevin smiled, slightly relaxing. "Sure, I'd love that. Let me just call Y/N."
"I'll be outside," Kate said, clearly elated at Kevin's answer. She winked at him and Kevin fidgeted on his feet, reaching for this phone and quickly finding your number. It rang twice before you answered.
"I'm going to be a while," he spoke. "Maybe you can get Blake to pick you up from the bookstore?"
"Okay, that's fine," you said, smiling at Blake as he walked into the store. "Blake's here, so we'll hang out."
"Alright, doll, see you later," Kevin hung up and shoved his phone and hands into his pockets, heaving a deep sigh before he stepped outside. Kate was waiting for him with a tender grin.
"Was that Kevin?" Blake asked, jaw locking as his shoulders tensed.
"Yeah, he's gonna be a while, told him I'm hanging out with you," you remarked, waving goodbye at the bookstore's owner before walking out alongside Blake.
"Okay," Blake cleared his throat, remaining silent.
You felt the awkward silent thick between you and quickly decided to diffuse the tension. "How are you? Are you doing okay?" You placed a hand on his elbow, squeezing it to stop him from walking forward. Blake turned his body to face you, the two of you remaining in the middle of the sidewalk.
Blake's eyes narrowed at you, searching your face. "Don't you remember anything from last night?"
You shook your head. "Just what I told you before at home. Why? What's wrong? What happened?"
He rubbed the back of his neck, debating on whether or not to just tell you everything. "Last night... Um..."
"Come on, Blake, out with it," you urged, smiling a bit. "It can't be that bad."
"You told me something," he said, biting his lower lip. His words hit you like bag of bricks and you pinched the bridge of your nose.
"Oh, God, what did I tell you?" you inquired, even though you had a pretty good idea about what you had said to Blake.
"Kevin and you aren't really... You know... Seeing each other. It's all a pretense to impress Kate."
"I should just tape my mouth when I get drunk," you exclaimed, raising your arms up in the air, feeling guilt pour into you. You should have kept yourself sober. Kevin had trusted you with this and at the first sigh, you had spilled your guts.
"It's okay, Y/N, I won't tell anyone," promised Blake. He reached for your hand and squeezed it reassuringly, easing some of the culpability. "Nothing is going on between you and Kevin, right?"
