Kevin couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe that Kate was standing in front of him, asking him to come back to her. Of course, he felt for her. After all, Kate had left her seemingly-happy relationship with JJ for a second chance with Kevin. He understood that, and if he could take back every single day since the wedding day, he would. He gladly would.
But he had explained everything to her. He had told her that they were both stuck in the past. He had not let himself immediately run to you, instead taking the time to go back to Kate's house and cordially break things off.
Kate had been strangely quiet about it. Had only glared at him as he spoke and explained to her that Kevin loved you, he loved you so much. She had glowered and shrugged. And Kevin had walked away without another word, finally closing the door on that part of his life.
"What are you doing here?" he spoke lowly, voice ice cold.
"Kevin, you know you don't want this," Kate remarked condescendingly, making Kevin immediately bristle.
"You don't know what I want, Kate."
"Kevin, come on. You and I both know that you can't live without me. That I can't live without you. We belong together. Stop being stupid and come back. I miss you. The house feels so empty without you, baby."
Kevin couldn't believe her. It had taken him years to realize it, but he was beginning to see the manipulative woman Kate was. She had just gone from being patronizing to whiny and pleading in a matter of seconds.
"You're kidding me, right?" he said. "Kate, it will never work out between us. We don't mesh. I don't think we ever did."
"What?" she screeched. "Are you kidding me? What about all those years together, Kevin? What about the thousands of times we said 'I love you' to each other? Did that not mean anything to you? Do I not mean anything to you? I'm not some piece of garbage you decide to throw out just because you got yourself a shiny, new toy! Y/N is hardly worth it."
"Whoa, hey, do not bring Y/N into this," Kevin bellowed, voice shaking with the anger mounting inside him.
"And why not? She's nothing but a man-stealing whore." Kate knew that she was pressing Kevin's buttons. She could see it in his eyes, they were steely.
"Don't talk about her! I don't want to hear her name on your lips!"
"Why do you insist on being with her?" Kate pressed on. "Why do you think it's right? All you and Y/N had were fabrications. Nothing between the two of you was real. What we had was real, Kevin Love!"
Kevin could feel the anger pulse through him, making his fists tremble. "Nothing we had was real. Nothing, Kate. You are manipulative and deceitful and I thought I loved you. But I have not known love before Y/N. She is the one that showed me what it is to love. Not you."
Kate threw her head back and laughed, the noise shrilly and causing Kevin to pull back and give her a strange look. "Love her? You love her? You are so stupid, Kevin. We both know you don't love her. If you did love her, you wouldn't have ever come with me, held me, kissed me the way you did. You don't love Y/N. You're just scared."
"Scared of what, Kate? If I should be scared of anything, it would be that I would lose Y/N! Nothing in this goddamn world scares me more than that. And you will not try to fucking manipulate me. We are done."
Kate stared at Kevin with tears in her eyes before her lips parted. "You don't mean that."
Kevin shut his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I do, Kate."
"You don't! You don't mean that, Kevin! You and I belong together, we love each other! You don't mean that! You don't mean it!" her voice progressively got louder until she was screaming her lungs out as Kevin only glared at her, chest heaving from having to hold himself back from yelling at her.
