Damien stood in front of the old metal doors, his hands rested against them. He couldn’t hear anything inside, but he could smell that Iris and Dante were there.
“Why do you hesitate to return to your childhood home?”
“I feel like I’ve let them down, somehow.” Damien replied
“How could you have possibly let them down? You were, are, a jewel in their hunting crown. You are far more skilled than your brother-“
“Don’t talk about Vand like that, he’s just as skilled as I am” Damien muttered.
“Only because he is partnered to a strong demon.”
“Either stop talking shit about my little brother, or I’ll leave you here with the old man. Your choice.”
Yamato didn’t say anything, Damien grinned in triumph. His smile vanished when he heard floorboards creak, someone was walking down the old stairs. Damien willed himself to open the doors, but he couldn’t. The doors opened without warning, inside stood a woman with dark green hair and bright yellow eyes. She was wearing striped pajama pants and a singlet, she must have just gotten out of bed. Iris smiled happily.
“Hello son”
Damien wrapped his arms around her, she was at least a head shorter than him.
“Hey Mom, it’s been a while” Damien replied.

“Where’s the old man?” Damien asked as Iris handed him a mug of coffee, sitting on the couch next to him.
“Your father is sleeping, he went hunting for fun and broke his spine” Iris replied, blowing the steam off her coffee and taking a sip.
“If he weren’t who he was, he’d be dead” Damien sighed.
“That reminds me, apparently you still have a high chance of developing Sparda’s healing abilities as you get older” Iris said “Have you felt different lately?”
You don’t even know the half of it, Damien wanted to say. “Not that I’m aware of. I haven’t been on a job for a few weeks, just been researching stuff.”
“Researching what?” Iris asked.
“I’m just gaining more knowledge on stuff, like portals and that kind of junk. Actually, do you know much on blood contracts?”
Iris raised an eyebrow in suspicion. “Yeah, I actually have two lower demons contracted to me. What do you want to know?”
“Is it possible to end a contract? Say, you only needed the demon once and decided to let it go, is it possible?”
“It is. If the master doesn’t want to end the contract the lower demon can’t end it. Of course, an outside party can end the contract too.”
“How is that done?”
“Why are you so curious?”
Damien shook his head. “I’m just interested.”
Iris rested her hand on Damien’s forehead, lifting his fringe that covered his right eye.
“You’re hiding something from me Damien” Iris said, letting his fringe fall back over his eye.
“And if I was, how would you know?”
“I’m your mother, I can tell. And I’ve seen someone with that look in their eye before.” Iris replied, putting her mug down on the coffee table. “Everyone has their secrets they have to keep in order to keep others safe. I didn’t tell your father I was pregnant with you and your brother because it would have endangered a lot of people. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, just be careful.”
Damien didn’t know what to say, so instead he rested his head on Iris’s shoulder. She wrapped an arm around his shoulders and hugged him.
“For an outside party to break a blood contract, they have two options. The first, physically sever the chain. That’s risky.”
“The second?”
“To mate with the lesser demon, once you’re mated they can’t be contracted to anyone else.”
