I stood terrified as the walkers began to make their way towards me, each one letting out a throaty groan.
I reached for my gun, trying to remeber what my father had taught me.
Load it. Check.
Cock it. Check.
Turn Safety Off. Check.
Pull the trigger. Check.
My hands shook nervously as I began eliminating the monsters one by one. I had taken down about three of them when it began to get too overwhelming. The fence from the backyard of the mall had been pushed over, allowing an influx of zombies to emerge into the mall.
I pulled the trigger once more. click. I was out of rounds.
I heard footsteps rushing down the stars, followed by labored breathing. "You alright? We heard gunshots and wa-." Layla was cut off.
I watched in horror as my best friend was dragged to the ground. She let out blood-curtling screams as she struggled to get free from the monster that had taken ahold of her. She screamed my name, begging for help, but I was paralyzed. I could do nothing but gaze in shock.
I had become numb.
The monster bit into her neck as she squirmed, blood trickling down her collarbone. She wailed. The smell of blood lured other unmentionables to my friend, as they mobbed around her.
She screamed my name one last time, before she fell silent.
"HOLY SHIT! EVELYN!' Louis yelled, trying to get my attention, noticing the utter hell around me.
I couldn't move. My veins had grown cold.
I suddenly felt strong arms lift me off the ground. Liam had picked me up. He began running up the stairs.
I could only keep my eyes fixed on what used to have been layla. Then, she was gone.

"Are you alright?" A familiar blue eyed boy stared into my eyes. We were outside now. The familiar sent of pine filled my nostrils. Birds chirped as if nothing ever happened.
But I couldn't reply. I couldn't say anything. Layla was gone. Gone.
"Let's bring her to camp. Maybe she'll be a bit more open when we get there. Christ Louis, her friend just died." Liam was taking me to camp. Great.

The walk to Liam's camp felt like an eternity. Layla's last words echoed in my mind. I felt guilty. I could have saved her.
Liam and Louis had made multiple attempts to talk to me, but I only answered with simple responses. My vocal cords had become dry.
My head pounded as Layla's echo became more prevalent. Every word she said rang louder and louder. I shrieked in pain as it became unbearbly loud.
I fell to the ground, my mind spinning. Liam and Louis had rushed to my side, but I blocked them out. All I could hear was Layla's scream.
