I watched Pavan's plane take off. I was going to miss that girl. She always seemed so cheerful and upbeat never trying to show the world that she hurts too. I used my sleeve to wipe a tear from my eye so Darius wouldn't notice.
We had taken his private plane back. I wasn't much in the mood for talking so Darius left me alone while he flipped through a football magazine. I was never really interested in sports unless I was there watching it live.
"Do you think she'll be alright?" I spoke into the air.
Darius looked up from his magazine and for a moment just stared into my eyes. I blushed and looked down at my hands. I hated that he could see he had an affect on me.
"At first...I wasn't sure, but now I realize that she's capable of flying so I should stop stepping on her wings."
I was almost going to cry again if not for Darius sitting across from me. I wasn't ready to let her go, but to stop her would be wrong. Maybe I should've...just this once went against the idea of who I'm supposed to be.
"So...." I said clearing my throat, "What if we went to South Korea too?"
I pressed my hands through my hair and avoided eye contact.
"I mean..." I continued, " We could go there without stepping on her wings."
Darius stopped reading his magazine and looked toward me. Or at least I assume that's what he was doing from what I could see from my downward eye level. There was a long pause and my throat became dry.
I stole a peek upward toward Darius and he had his arms crossed and a mysterious look on his face. It reminded me of the day I first met him.
Pavan was around thirteen years old, which made me...fourteen. I'm a year older than Pavan, but because of where my birthday falls I started school the same time she did. In the past I had always invited Pavan to my house and my mom would drive her home. Of course I would come along for the ride, but I never saw her brother.
About the time her father passed away Pavan stopped coming to my house. For awhile all we had was the time we spent at school together. I missed Pavan so much around that time. So when she invited me for a sleepover I didn't turn her down.
Unfortunately, that was the day one of my classmates went crazy with the scissors. Apparently some girl he liked turned him down so he thought he would get revenge by cutting her hair. When the teacher left the classroom this kid locked the door and forced all the girls in the corner.
There was more girls in the class then boys, so the boys that were there were scrawny or afraid of this kid. He started laughing and ordering the boys to push all the desk against the door of the classroom. By this time the girls were screaming and crying me included.
Pavan and I didn't have this class together so I was left all alone. The boy proceeded to grab one of the girls from the corner and cut her hair off. The girl's blonde hair fell to her sides and she was practically bald when it was over. I crouched down in fear.
He pushed the sobbing girl toward the terrified boys and threatened to hurt them if they tried to stop him. Then he pulled another girl out from the pile. I watched as he pulled her ponytail out and cut away her curls. The girls started screaming louder especially the girl who turned him down.
He grabbed her and smiled. She pleaded with him saying she was sorry and that she was wrong, but by now he was past caring. He pulled at her long red hair and snip by snip it was gone. She had bald patches in her head when he threw her to the ground. She was crying so hard and her face was red.
