Piper sat by the tree for a few seconds, watching Albus slowly shrink and fade out of view until she couldn't see him anymore.
Her cheeks were burning in mortification, she realised, as she reached up and wiped away the tears she hadn't even realised were falling.
When had it all gone so wrong?
He'd kissed her back when she'd kissed him in the snow, Piper remembered. But maybe he'd only felt sorry for her... or maybe he would as afraid of Rose. Maybe he'd done it because their parents were good friends and he hadn't wanted to make things awkward.
Well, now things would be awkward, Piper thought furiously. Why couldn't they still be friends? Even a tiny bit of him would be better than nothing at all, right?
Even if she couldn't be with him in the way she wanted, being friends would be better than nothing, surely?
Then she thought back to all those months, caring for Albus as more than a friend, and living with the permanent pain. She hadn't even noticed it at first, denying it to herself...
It had gotten worse after she'd accepted it. And now, if she had stayed friends with Albus feeling the way she did, and knowing he didn't feel the same way... How would she bear it?
Maybe it was better that they stayed apart.
But suddenly Piper's fury was back. Shouldn't she get to make that decision? She was the one who should have decided, not him. She was the one with the feelings all over the place, not him. She was the one who had the right to make that decision, not him.
He shouldn't have felt uncomfortable. He knew Piper well enough to know that she wouldn't try and kiss him or whatever once he'd made it clear he wasn't interested. He should have know that, should have let them stay friends anyway. But instead... instead he was running away. Running away from her.
Piper had half a mind to run after Albus and demand to have their conversation all over again. She would tell him she wouldn't make it awkward, that their friendship could carry on even if one half of the friendship cared about the other half in a very non-friendly way...
Piper found herself suddenly wanting to scream.
It had all gone so horribly, horribly wrong, and Piper didn't know how to fix it.
Wow so short. I'm sorry. On a side note, I currently have up to chapter 17 written because I literally wrote 5 chapters in one day. You're welcome.
